In the meantime, enjoy Habitation, a small rechargeable illuminated sculpture inspired by futurist architecture. Light emanates from the top and bottom, as well as from curved slots on both sides of the suspended wood body. A felt-lined, holey metal framework stabilizes and elevates this affordable home for photons.

This piece is called Neighbors.

Neighbors places two competitive plants in the same container, sharing earth and space, trapping them in a perpetual argument. The interaction mirrors divisions among people living together, near each other, or on disputed land. The planter is plastic, encased in painted sheet metal, with felt feet. A Raspberry Pi running a local LLM generates the conversation, forever.

Folded, painted laser cut steel, acrylic, felt, cherry wood, microcontroller, RGB LEDs, lithium battery.

When you're living in earthquake country, training tells you to cover your head, get under something sturdy, and hold on. At the top of a roller coaster's tallest arc, the best way to steady your stomach is to reach over to the person beside you and hold on. When the most important person in your life is saying goodbye and you can't bear it, hold on tight. This piece is for all the people just holding on.

Hold On is illuminated from both sides by 32 RGB LEDs, fading through meditative warm and cool tones at random intervals and in random order. It can run plugged into USB power, or untethered for six-plus hours on a charge. A button toggles the piece between standard always-on mode and "sculpture mode," which lets it operate unplugged for more than a month by fading in and out at random intervals of 8 to 12 minutes.

The Great Highway Gallery presents LIGHTNING ROOM, a two-person exhibition and installation by San Francisco-based artist couple @mel_prest_k and Andrew Kleindolph. Please join us for the opening reception, Saturday, October 17th, from 6-9 p.m. Additional events will be announced.

The harmony and play of this installation arises from the artists’ many years of parallel art practices. Both artists carefully consider color, form, meditation, and movement in different but related ways. The interaction of Prest’s kinetic line and color meshes and Kleindolph’s organic glowing forms create an optically and literally charged field. Mel uses a tiny brush to create intimately-sized and room-filling paintings of visually electrifying hand-painted pathways. Andrew’s newest works include folded metal and colorful mixed-media tabletop sculpture, illuminated LED pieces, and internet-connected, occasionally changing sculptures. The front window installation will include a site-specific painting by Prest on the wall and Kleindolph’s electronic sculptures on the floor.

In San Francisco’s Sunset neighborhood, The Great Highway Gallery is a great place to support local art and business. Gallery owner John Lindsey also runs @rustyladlesf restaurant next door, which serves some of the best clam chowder (and other soups) in town.
