I go where the world gets quiet enough for the wild to feel unreal.

🌎Natures wonder: Green-crowned Brilliant- Heliodoxa jaculaIts! Heart can race to 1,200 beats per minute, its wings blur up to 90 times a second. Every day, it visits thousands of flowers in search of nectar. In absolute terms, it survives on only a few calories. But relative to its tiny body, that’s the equivalent of a human eating around 70 full daily diets every single day. Sugar turns straight into flight. At night, it slows almost to silence. At night, it enters torpor, slowing its heartbeat and lowering its body temperature to save energy.

You think you’re exploring the world…
until something looks back and studies you.

Would you sleep in a nest like this? A whole hanging city in the jungle!
This is an Oropendola in Ecuador - one of the most underrated birds in the Amazon.

• In these colonies, one dominant alpha male (in the photo) usually controls most of the mating
The other males rarely get access to the females - they are welcome stay on the sidelines and watch, or may leave to try their chances elsewhere 🥲

• Only females are builders - they build long hanging nests up to 1 meter, woven like ropes. It takes weeks of precision work and they have often one backup nest

• Colonies can have dozens of nests on one tree

• Males perform loud, almost mechanical calls, sounds like water droplet to attract attention

• And yes… they choose trees where snakes and monkeys can’t easily reach - trees with ant and wasp nests - because survival here is not luck, it’s design!

The wild doesn’t disappear in rescue.
It waits, watches, and remembers.
