10 years ago after receiving the news that my grandmother was beginning to transition… The family gathered at our house. We prayed over her, sang to her, and just spent those last moments with her all together. surrounded by love. 6:21 AM on June 17 2016 she took her last breath surrounded by all that love & energy. I will never forget that moment.

10 years later, it doesn’t get easier. it becomes bearable, i have moments where im angry, sad and just overcome with grief. because she should be here. there’s cousins that haven’t met her in the physical. there’s been many milestones within the family that i know she would’ve celebrated just as loudly with us if she were still here. there will be weddings, more graduations and family reunions where her presence will be missed, but hopefully felt.

I speak your name. I hold your spirit with mine. I try to envision the conversations we would’ve had. I thank you for the life you lived. because of you i am Ezenwanyi. I know i am divinely protected. I know I am Black, Beautiful, and Strong! I know i am Resilient, Capable, Talented and more! i know because of you, how you carried yourself, how you showed up for the people, how you fought for liberation and lead movements, but mostly how you spoke into your children and grandchildren.

I pray you continue to watch over and guide me.🦋
I hope you, poppy and all the ancestors in our beautiful family are together and happy.
