Exactly 5 months ago today, I lost my baba after 1 year of battling stage 4 colon cancer. Nothing can truly prepare you for the loss of a parent. My heart aches for him every day, and learning to live in this new reality has been heart shattering.

In moments of grief, I hold on to the beauty of having a father who imagined a life greater than his own for us. Baba left his home and family in Sudan at 17 to travel and landed in New York in the 80s to build a better future, not just for the people he grew up with in Bahari, Sudan, but also for four daughters he hadn’t met yet.

We’ll spend the rest of our lives honoring his sacrifices and legacy, through our actions, our work, and how we show up for the people around us. Baba’s name, Eltayeb, means “the kind one,” and he embodied that with humility, gave selflessly, and carried himself with quiet strength.

We’re so proud to be banat Eltayeb (daughters of the kind one) We are his wildest dreams come true, and our success is his success tenfold. May Allah grant him the highest level of Jannah and bless us with patience and strength. May we celebrate and honor our immigrant fathers on Father’s Day and everyday, especially during this climate. ❤️ by @ezzyelzi
