The fire was raging inches behind my head.

This is the airbox on the 1992 Benetton B192, the yellow Camel bodywork that sits right behind the driver.

During the fire at Shelsley Walsh, flames were coming out of the holes on both sides of it. You can still see the blackening and scorching where it was burning inside.

I was lucky to get out when I did.

The original airbox has been badly burnt inside so we might well need a new one. It’s being assessed at the moment, and the team are trying to find a mould.

If you know anyone who has one, or can point us in the right direction, please get in touch, it would be a massive help.

All the other carbon bits and bodywork are with Carbon Repair UK in Towcester.

The Cosworth HB engine is at Langford Performance Engineering in Wellingborough, being carefully pulled apart so we can see exactly what’s been affected.

Getting this car back on track properly is going to take specialist work, parts and money. Any donation helps cover the inspections, engineering and restoration so we can get it running safely again.

If you can’t donate, sharing this still makes a real difference.

A damaged harness can create a short circuit, ignite residual fuel vapour or damage expensive ignition and engine-control components.
Repair or replacement?

For a valuable historic F1 car, experts would not recommend simply cutting out the visibly burned wires and adding ordinary automotive cable.

The preferred approach is:

1. Photograph and label every connector, branch and routing position.
2. Remove the complete affected harnesses.
3. Build a pin-to-pin wiring diagram before dismantling.
4. Inspect the engine, gearbox, sensors, ignition equipment, battery, alternator and fire-system circuits separately.
5. Replace all heat-affected cable, terminals, backshells, sleeving, clamps and suspect connectors.
6. Use motorsport-grade thin-wall cable, proper crimped terminals and high-temperature sleeving.
7. Test insulation resistance, continuity, shielding, polarity, shorts to ground and voltage drop.
8. Pressure-test or replace nearby fuel, oil, coolant and hydraulic hoses.
9. Test the fire bottle and electrical fire-system trigger independently.
10. Carry out a controlled first power-up using current limiting and suitable fire protection.
If the original harness is historically significant, the best restoration may involve making a new operational harness while retaining the damaged original as evidence, rather than rebuilding the burned original with hidden repairs.

Indicative cost.

There is no normal “off-the-shelf B192 wiring harness” price. The cost depends mainly on whether the car still has complete drawings, whether the original connectors are available and whether the fire reached the engine and cockpit looms.

For the damage visible in your photograph, experts would budget approximately £10,000–£20,000 initially, assuming the main harnesses need to be remade but the ECU/ignition, sensors and major electrical units are recoverable.

If the fire affected the engine bay, cockpit wiring, fire system and electronic hardware, £25,000–£40,000 or more would be realistic.

The wiring would normally be divided into several removable sub-harnesses rather than one universal road-car loom.

Likely fire damage
The image shows several serious warning signs:

* The long black-wrapped harness is visibly heat-damaged.
* The outer braid or insulation appears melted, charred and brittle.
* Several wires are exposed near the upper connector area. There are loose conductors, damaged insulation and what looks like improvised or degraded termination.
* The connector and terminal blocks should be treated as suspect, even if they appear physically intact. Heat can destroy the crimp grip, plating and insulation inside a connector without obvious external melting.
* The small black relay/terminal assembly is unsafe to reuse without testing.
* The harness routing and adjacent hoses may also have been affected.

Fire can damage fuel, oil, coolant, hydraulic and pneumatic lines at temperatures below the point where they visibly burn.
* Heat damage may extend inside the loom.

A harness can look acceptable externally while individual conductors have annealed, oxidised or become brittle beneath the wrapping.

The fire damage is therefore unlikely to be limited to the visibly blackened section. The correct assumption is that every conductor, connector, heat sleeve, clamp and nearby fluid line exposed to the fire must be inspected and electrically tested.
Do not power the car or connect a battery to this wiring.

The photograph shows the sidepod area of the 1992 Benetton B192 Formula One car.

The visible system is not a normal road-car loom; it is a lightweight, race-specific electrical installation combining:

• A main chassis wiring harness.
• Engine and sensor wiring.
• Ignition and fuel-system wiring.
• Starter, alternator and battery connections.
• Fire-system wiring.
• Telemetry/data-acquisition wiring.
• Switches, relays, circuit protection and cockpit controls.
• Separate hydraulic, fuel and oil lines routed alongside the electrical harness.

The B192 would have used a relatively simple electrical architecture compared with modern F1 cars.

Its key electrical functions would include the Ford HB V8’s ignition and engine-management-related systems, fuel pumps and injectors, sensors, ignition cut/kill circuits, starter provision, battery/alternator charging, radio/telemetry and the driver’s switches.

The wiring would normally be divided into several removable sub-harnesses rather than one universal road-car loom.

Now that the engine builders are now back at work from their annual shutdown, Dick Langford can now start to strip the engine to see just how much damage has been done😩. It doesn’t look too good from the photo that’s for sure😢
Please have a look at the Go fund me if you can every little helps.

THE AFTERMATH…

What I didn’t know as I freewheeled back towards the paddock was that a raging fire had already engulfed the rear of the car — just inches from the back of my head.

It wasn’t until I saw smoke in my mirror that I realised something was terribly wrong. There was no time to think, only to react.

I managed to reach the safety of the tarmac near the marshals before stopping and activating the onboard extinguisher.

I walked away virtually unscathed — something I will never take for granted.

Sadly, the damage to this extraordinary piece of F1 history is far greater than we initially believed. Specialists are now assessing what can be saved, restored or painstakingly remanufactured.

The road ahead will not be easy, but I’m determined to do everything possible to see this remarkable car back where it belongs.

Thank you for the incredible kindness and support we’ve received.

This may be our biggest challenge yet… but this story isn’t over. 🏁 by @f1_diva

Although we take our driving in the FORCE F1 Demonstrations very seriously, we always manage to have a lot of fun at every one of our events! Surprises are always in store like @dizzeerascal coming to get a close up of David Trigg’s Ferraris thanks to @premiergt and then @djmdigital bringing Alan Shepherd’s new Girl Band Sweet Love for a photoshoot with me and the stunning purple Formula 1 Simtek kindly being lent to me by @mmcallister93. All of that plus lots of friends @thedriversunion and @Kent ferrariownersclub certainly helped to make the day complete🥰😜🏎️🏁 by @f1_diva
