Community photos from our vigil for Gaza’s journalists on Saturday, Aug. 16, 2025, held in Atlanta’s Freedom Park, the same site where a handful of us had gathered nearly two years ago to mourn the 60 media workers killed between October and December 2023. That number has more than quadrupled since, and Israel continues to terrorize and silence any pressworker who dares expose the truth of their violence.

Over 200 of you joined us to honor and grieve the martyred who dared to tell those truths, and I commend you for bringing your grief and anger to the green, and I urge you to please continue to scream and to scream so much louder than you ever dreamed you had the lungs to scream.

We have witnessed bloodied press helmets and vests, targeted air strikes on journalists’ homes wiping out entire lineages, and we’ve watched as their coverage gets disparaged by Western media time and time again to discredit their realities, warp their intentions, and keep us from trusting even what we see and hear with our own eyes and ears. We must scream.

We’ve witnessed the murders of at least 274 media workers killed and targeted by Israel. Most were local journalists just like us, and they died covering the nightmare unfolding in their own homeland until their final breaths, wondering if just one more story of a 5-year-old child shot at 335 times, another flour massacre, another hospital strike, might be the story that does it, that ends it all, that brings urgent ire from their colleagues in the West, from us. We must scream.

You only target and kill journalists when your enemy is the truth. We must scream. taken in Atlanta, Georgia by @f1za

A heartfelt, tearful thank-you to all Atlanta press and allies who joined us tonight to honor the 60+ journalists killed since Oct. 7, most of them local journalists just like us, who died covering the destruction of their homeland, aching for their international media colleagues — for us — to sound the alarm. We cried with strangers, held each other in our collective grief, made new friends with hearts burst open, reunited with familiar, warm faces. I heard people say they didn’t know they needed this. Same. Dear journalists in Gaza, we hear you. And we won’t let the world forget.

And a special thank you to the dream team for real. Love you to pieces @sophiejabeen @sonamvashi @matmountain. What are we doing next? 😌

Illustrations from the vigil were kindly contributed by extraordinary cartoonist @channeldraw, and data used throughout the event came from @committeetoprotectjournalists. A lovely group of organizers from newsrooms all over the city as well as dear friends helped set up, clean up, spread the word. Imam Wazir graciously joined us to read aloud the names of all 64 killed on the CPJ list. Colleagues at @city_bureau and other Chicago journalists inspired us with their own vigil, and really helped this grassroots effort come to life. Thank you. To all of you. taken in Freedom Park by @f1za

what’s keeping me afloat: family, faith, silhouettes of love under a sunset, soaring birds in the sky, curious birds on the sand, soft soft sand, memories of soft soft sand in my grandfather’s grays, the sound of waves crashing during salah, scrabble at the dining table, crowded tex-mex joints, bombs falling on the oppressors like long-awaited glitter, long walks with girlfriends, the suppressed desire to be seen and loved again finding its way back, dad’s mangoes on the beach, daydreams of Cairo and Egypt for some odd reason, overpriced tinned fish soaked in lime juice, my sweet animals, my weightlifting gains, this strong body, this soft heart, this curious mind, Allah. by @f1za

I now feel like part of the family of activists in #Atlanta, even though I’ve never been there. I’m always glad that my drawings are used to raise awareness in the community about the tragedy affecting Palestine. I truly hope to visit Atlanta soon to meet everyone in person.

On Saturday, August 16, a moving vigil was held at Freedom Park in memory of all the journalists brutally killed by the Israeli occupation.

There is only one reason to target Palestinian journalists: to hide the truth about the barbaric violence we have been witnessing for almost two years. Israel continues to prevent international journalists from entering Gaza — we must ask ourselves why.

Many of us had grown attached to these reporters, now martyrs, who courageously documented the genocide of their own people, and of themselves.

Thank you, Atlanta, for coming together yesterday to honor and pay respect to the journalists of Palestine — so many who carried out, and some who still carry out, the most dangerous job in the world.

We owe everything to Palestinian journalists: without them, we would all still be in the dark.

A special thanks to @f1za

hi friends, I know many in our community are feeling overwhelmed with *all this* but please take a minute to read and share: my friends and I are trying to raise urgent funds for a community member and her child to leave a dangerous living situation. even a dollar makes a difference — and if you can’t donate, please circulate widely 💐
