At the beginning of 2025, I came up with an idea that I would take a picture at every school I ever graduated from in my regalia. Becoming a physician was a dream I carried through all of these schools, so it only felt right to come back after I made it happen. This series of pictures would be sentimental, nostalgic, and a full circle moment to appreciate anytime I looked at them.

Each school gave a solid foundation and the education needed to reach this final academic milestone. The people I met, and the experiences I got to have at each of these places helped build me into who I am today; I’m grateful to still have friends from every school who I cheer on as they do for me.

I think, when I used to ask my future self if I’m on the right track and will accomplish my goals, I felt the spirit of me walking alongside him on campus, now Dr. Watson, saying yes. Your future self is waiting at a finish line somewhere for you, too.

Almost brought a tear to my eye putting this together, looking at how far we came.

The only regret I have is not documenting more of the journey earlier, showing not just the ups but the downs too.

Still, I wouldn’t have done it any other way.

When you think of the word “doctor”, you’re probably thinking of these four types of people: your general practice family medicine doctor, a surgeon of some sort, an emergency medicine doctor, or a hospitalist. Most people don’t grow up wishing to be a radiologist. It’s not the most glamorous, prestigious, or prominent field, but it’s for the few and proud who IYKYK. Often, it’s the sleeper choice that people discover later on in med school training (since it isn’t a core rotation, you have to electively seek it out).

Diagnostic Radiology is an auxiliary specialty, like Pathology, where our main role is to augment and support the jobs of other specialties. Because of this, a majority of time is spent with image interpretation, and there is significantly less patient interaction. I didn’t choose Rads to get away from patients, as helping patients get better is one of the main reasons I (and most others) pursued medicine, but I found that Rads would be the best intersection of my interests, skills, and how I fit in the multidisciplinary mosaic of patient care in medicine.

There have been personal instances that Radiology helped loved ones of mine to find reassurance, optimism, and closure with their health issues that I want to be able to give to others.

My school has a big focus on ultrasound, and ever since my first session, I fell in love with the ability to see beyond the surface; I knew, somehow, I wanted my medical career to incorporate more of that to some degree. I appreciate the role for what it is; one of the most important doctors in the hospital that you may never see – a leader in the background, whose clinical acumen is not only highly valued, but often the definitive voice for how to proceed. And don’t worry… me and AI will become very good friends.

My last AMEC as a student allowed a full cup to overflow. 3 AMECs ago as an M1, I dreamed of what my victory lap would feel like, and it exceeded expectations. Overwhelming to see so much inspiration, love and greatness from people of color. I was reminded I’m an answered prayer for those who needed help or motivation along this path, those who asked God to deliver me on this journey, and strangers on the street who have never seen a doctor of color till that moment. I pray for many others just as they pray for me.
