🤔 While the Manitou FS frame also had a rear fork, it sure didn’t have telescoping chain stays as well.

Different spring rates top and bottom. Lower shocks tuned for large bump compliance. Upper shocks for small bump compliance.

All shocks have dampers with shim stack valving for tuning on compression and rebound. And a nitro charge with a float piston.

⚡️ Shaking down the suspension with no springs in the top shocks to check for any stiction with the new axle blocks.

Blown away by the love and thoughtfulness of my wife @kwmusto and her co-conspirators @coppermike_gravesendcycles and @lex.fabbroindustries. The bike I never should have sold is finally home ❤️.

I built this bike while I apprenticed for @coppermike_gravesendcycles. Almost every piece made by hand at night after working all day. I sold it when I was starting out in my shop full time. Then I saw it chopped up, parted out, and listed on Facebook over the years. And every time it just broke my heart. After years of seeing it suffer, unbeknownst to me, my wife cooked up a plan to finally bring her home, once and for all. And I can’t put into words how it makes me feel to have it again.

A lot is obviously missing. But she still has the tank I handmade from scratch. The seat made by a craftsman who has since passed. The hidden oil bag I made in the saddle bag that I bought when Mike and I were on the road. And so many other little gems.

A lot of work to do to bring it back to its glory. But I am elated, excited and eternally grateful. 🙏🏼 @kwmusto @coppermike_gravesendcycles @lex.fabbroindustries

I try to avoid working on mowers like the plague. But this was for a good friend in a jam. This Scag commercial mower frame was cracked in numerous spots. Scag wouldn’t sell him a new frame. And he just got new hydros and a new motor for it.

Swipe through to see the process - we cut out the bad sections of tubing. Built an inner frame support (thanks to @sendcutsend ) - the inner support wall thickness matched the sidewall thickness of original tubing. That got hammered into the entire length of existing frame rail and plug welded in place. Also served as a slug to align the new frame sections.

Everything got welded up. Added some gussets and plates where needed. Cut out and rebuilt anything that was broken. Out the door and back to them to be essentially completely restored. ✅

Post of appreciation to my wife @kwmusto and my sister @lex.fabbroindustries for being real ones over the past 15ish years…but especially the last few months. Showing up when the pressure is on, working with me until 2 or 3 am, bringing me meals so I don’t have to leave the shop, and especially helping patina over 1,000 brass components for the custom wine rack/cooler we built. I saw “we” a lot when I talk about the work that leaves this shop, and my family is the reason why.

⚡️ Full disclosure: was not in the groove this weekend. Dipped my tungsten about 456 times. Was just not feeling it. But the first #Type57x #ebike frame is welded.

The girder that never quite got finished. Designed and built in partnership with @iaconacustomcycles for a wild build he’s doing. All machined from solid steel in-house. Oilite bushings. Thrust washers. Every piece custom made and no details left out.

When we had it all tacked together, packed it up and shipped to him with the intent of test fitting it before final welding. Unfortunately, UPS literally ran the box over, and bent not only the front end, but a few other machined aluminum components that were packaged in bubble wrap in a separate box in the box.

Once that happened, it took the wind out of both of our proverbial sails and we shelved the whole project. Before it was tweaked, we were pretty stoked on how it was coming out though. Maybe we’ll dig back into it and get it finished up this year 🤷‍♂️.

A look back at our first prototype Type 57x shock absorbers. All the shock bodies and components were machined manually in-house because I had no CNC equipment.

These were actually a twin tube style shocks vs the DeCarbon style shocks we developed for our most recent bike and e-bike prototypes.

The system was underdamped. The shocks suffered performance issues. And almost everything about them has been re-designed since we began our development on bikes. But, it worked. And it proved that it could work. Gotta start somewhere.
