🌍We’re a global initiative for productive, resilient, open cities 🌎

Climate breakdown and social exclusion require us to reinvent the fundamental systems we depend upon, a task which requires courage, coherence and long-term thinking. Humans consume planetary resources at a rate that puts planetary systems at risk. We need a deep transformation of how we organise production and consumption in cities.

GAWA means "happiness" in Dzongkha.

It was the name chosen by a team at the Fab Bhutan Challenge in 2023.

12 weeks of preparation. Five Fab Labs working in parallel. International teams and Bhutanese labs side by side. A prototyping week in-country, on themes that came directly from local priorities: climate-adaptive agriculture, water stewardship, human-wildlife conflict, cultural preservation, and assistive technologies. The five teams delivered five prototypes, one per theme.

After that, an independent Asian Development Bank analysis projected an economic return of $5 to $12 per dollar spent on the Challenge, even in scenarios where only one solution scales.

Fab City Challenge is not just an event. It's a capacity-building mechanism.

🌍 make-a-thek is going global!

After months of making, learning and connecting across Europe, we’re excited to take the next step: Global Pilots are joining the make-a-thek community!

From libraries and makerspaces to local communities, the Global Pilots will bring the make-a-thek approach to new places, exploring how making can connect people, knowledge, skills and ideas.

We’re excited to welcome our new Global Pilots and to see how make-a-thek takes shape in their communities. ✨
Welcome to the make-a-thek community!

Residencies are one of the most powerful ways for makerspaces to exchange knowledge, build cross-cultural networks, and grow their communities. But designing one that actually delivers takes more than good intent.

This guide, prepared by GreenTec Capital Africa Foundation as part of EUmAkE, distils the key insights from running international maker residencies into a practical, honest reference for planners and funders.

It covers what actually matters when hosting a residency: starting early (at least six months for visas, materials, and matching), making sure the match between maker and mentor is aligned on goals rather than only skills, keeping communication simple, creating a real sense of belonging for the makers, giving enough time for experimentation, and being transparent about financial support for everyone involved, including the hosting makerspace.

Especially relevant for Fab City Hubs, Fab Labs, and network members hosting international makers, running mobility programmes, or designing cross-network exchanges.

🌍 10 towns. 3 countries. 12 days. 450 people.

Here's the story of how a moving makerspace brought circular fashion and crafts to 10 towns in 3 countries, and 450+ participants.

Last summer, @makeathek 's van, Matty, hit the road. Packed with a tent, tables, a handful of domestic sewing machines, many other tools and materials and the shared expertise of dedicated local partners. The van transformed ten local libraries across Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania into engaging community hubs, into circular nodes.

Explore how it connected the communities, extended circular practices, and reactivated local expertise via the link in bio.

Throwback → Fab Island Challenge, Bali

"There are things that cannot be solved somewhere in a laboratory in a great university in the world. They need to be addressed while you get in touch with the communities, while you are in the places."

Ten teams. Ten days. Innovators from across the world working alongside Bali's fishing communities, coffee and cacao farmers, plastic recycling groups, and craftspeople, on the problems those communities were already living with.

They didn't arrive with solutions. They listened first, then co-designed.

What emerged: floating solar-to-hydrogen pods. Low-tech coffee bean sorters. A distributed 3D-printed prosthetics network. A community plastic exchange. Water sensors for recharge wells.

Some of those projects didn't stop when the Challenge program was finished: the Floating Solar-to-Hydrogen Energy Pods team went on to build the Green Hydrogen Village, a multi-year programme in Desa Serangan that just won the Fab City Awards 2026 Overall Impact Award.

That's what a Fab City Challenge is. Not a hackathon. Not a design sprint. A place-based methodology for bringing global knowledge and local wisdom into direct solutions.

Fab City Science is a collaborative initiative to design, prototype, and test new urban models that turn cities and regions into productive hubs. It aims to increase our understanding of what needs to be produced closer to home, and to deploy real solutions through labs, pilots and open-source tools.

Some context: over the last decade, 61 cities, regions and countries committed to producing locally almost everything they consume by 2054. That pledge set a direction, not a method. Nobody has a shared way to measure how much a city actually makes of what it uses, or to test alternatives at a scale a mayor can act on.

That is the work. It runs from the Fab City Research Lab with MIT's Center for Bits and Atoms @cba.mit and the City Science Group @mitcityscience at the MIT Media Lab @mitmedialab , and it has three parts:

Urban performance models, open and comparable, to measure production, wellbeing, and sustainability in a given place.

Fab City Science Labs, large enough to run hyperlocal production, intelligence and computation for real, not as a demo.

Thematic pilots across the network, starting with textiles, furniture, agriculture and waste, because that is where most of the material in a city actually sits.

We're looking for collaborators: cities, labs, universities, manufacturers, funders.

How do we measure a new Earth?

At @arselectronica this year, Fab City took part in a session on updating the Great Acceleration charts, the twenty-four indicators tracking human impact on the planet since 1750, first published in 2004.

The Great Acceleration charts told us what's happening. They didn't tell us where anyone could respond.

A new essay from our Network Lead Lars Petrova-Taylor on what happens when measurement is connected to the places where people can actually act.

Fab City in Linz this week, at @arselectronica

Fab City, joined the TFL × Ars Electronica satellite event with a workshop on the shift from Fab Labs to territorial orchestration. Attendees were asked to design one loop in their own city, starting from what already exists.

Linz showcases itself as an active node of its territory: sensing the ground with residents, logging that data so it counts, then orchestrating the people, materials and machines that are already there with @tabakfabriklinz a creative playground in Linz who have been part of the network since 2020.

Linz shows what this looks like in practice. Sensing the ground with residents, logging what matters, orchestrating the people, materials, and machines already there. Thanks Ars Electronica!

Special thanks to Fab City Linz's partners we had the occasion to meet in person: @factory300_linz startup base, the @grandgaragelinz makerspace, and hashtag @artmagazin_tabakfabrik , where the artists' community is based.
