Io Capitano 🎥 Drama 🎥 2023 🎥 Matteo Garrone

From the director of Dogman and Gomorrah, comes a beautiful, tragic and deeply human story of two boys attempting to create the future they dream of. The naive and playful Seydou (Seydou Sarr) and his cousin Moussa (Moustapha Fall) decide to leave their hometown of Dakka in Senegal for the temptations that Europe offers. But with little understanding of the task they’ve set themselves, the boys soon run into dangers and horrors unthinkable. In another persons hands this could be a bleak and uncompromising story about immigration but Garrone strikes a remarkable balance between the hopeful and heartwarming amidst the very worst of humankind. Genuinely one of the most powerful films I’ve seen this year with fantastic performances all round. 🇸🇳

Past Lives 🎥 Romance/Drama 🎥 2023 🎥 Celine Song

When Nora’s (Greta Lee) family emigrated from South Korea she leaves behind her best friend and childhood sweetheart Hae Sung (Teo Yoo). Over a decade later they reconnect online but the distance proves too much for their relationship to flourish and they separate again, until they are reunited a decade later in New York, when both of their lives look very different to when they were kids. A beautifully shot, subtly performed exploration of love, friendship, and the impact of our choices. Recommend getting to the cinema to catch this gem before it’s gone.

Good Luck to You, Leo Grande 🎥 Comedy, Drama 🎥 2022 🎥 Sophie Hyde

A retired teacher Nancy Stokes (Emma Thompson) is precariously stepping into a new world of sexual awakening assisted by the kind hearted and charismatic Leo Grande* (Daryl McCormack). This is a gentle, funny and heartwarming film about trust, self-care and you guessed it, sex. Performances all round are absolutely stunning as the relationship between two strangers slowly reveals the beauty to be found in vulnerability and the fun to be had in finding out what you really do (or don’t) want. 🍆 💦 🍑

The Phantom of the Open 🎥 Comedy, Drama 🎥 2021 🎥 Craig Roberts

A wonderfully heartwarming story about the unlikely underdog, Maurice Flitcroft (Mark Rylance), a crane operator from Barrow-in-Furness who, through pure optimism and relentless enthusiasm found himself at The British Open Golf Championship qualifying in 1976, even though he’d never played a round of golf in his life. Although his game left a lot to be desired his positive spirit and strong belief that you can be anything you desire, spread far and wide including to his sons who just so happen to be champion disco dancers. An absolutely fantastic performance from Rylance who’s joined by a brilliant cast in a film that’s perfect for a rainy day after a long Easter weekend with all the wonderful golfing snobbery and sporting humour you’d want. ⛳️

The Banshees of Inisherin 🎥 Drama 🎥 2022 🎥 Martin McDonagh

A beautiful but brutal story of brotherly rejection set on the stunning and remote west coast of Ireland. Lifelong friends Pádraic (Colin Farrell) and Colm (Brendan Gleeson), find themselves at loggerheads when Colm suddenly decides to put an end to their friendship. Shocked, Pádraic, helped with advice from his sister Siobhán (Kerry Condon) and troubled young islander Dominic (Barry Keoghan) tries to win back his friends affections. Unfortunately Colm’s mind is made up and anything Pádraic's does to try and get his friend back only make matters worse. Outstanding performances all round from an incredible cast. Navalny 🎥 Documentary 🎥 2022 🎥 Daniel Roher

Perhaps the most important documentary to watch right now. This crazy story following Putin’s opposition and nemesis Alexei Navalny telling the story of his attempted assassination in 2020 and tracking down the men who attempted to assassinate him with Putins signature chemical weapon, Novichok. The antithesis of Putin, Navalny’s a man desperate to bring democracy to Russia and is willing to put his life (& those around him) on the line to that end. He’s a modern, handsome, TikTok using ex-lawyer, journalist and political activist trying to take down one of the most extreme regimes in the world. The entire film feels like something out of a writersroom-
“Let’s make a thriller out of this movie,” suggests Alexei Navalny to director, Daniel Roher. “And then, if I am killed, you can make a boring movie of memory.”
With characteristic humour Navalny shrugs off the extreme threat facing him- it seems there’s no other way to face the enemy he’s against than with a smile and a strength that’s devastating to watch but seeming unwavering.

Four Lions 🎥 Comedy/Drama 🎥 2010 🎥 Christopher Morris

A group of hapless young Muslim men from Sheffield decide to wage jihad but quickly find themselves out of their depths. Omar (Riz Ahmed) and Waj (Kayvan Novak) head to a Pakistani training camp that’s cut short because of a disastrous mishap and their mate Faisal (Adeel Akhtar) remains home to train the worlds first bomb-carrying crow. Eventually they arrive on the day of the London marathon where their extraordinarily ill-conceived plan plays out in a selection of extraordinary costumes. A remarkably balanced and brilliantly scripted black comedy that is both hilarious and potentially horrifying in equal measure.

The Hand of God 🎥 Drama 🎥 2021 🎥 Paolo Sorrentino

A wonderfully winding coming-of-age story following awkward Italian teen Fabietto (Filippo Scotti) as he fixates on football, inappropriate lusts and family life…. all inexplicably intertwined. Beautifully shot, with a full heart and wry sense humour this brilliant observed and charming piece of cinema creates a subtle nostalgia for a 1980s Napoli that you never even knew.
