When I first heard about mister Anthony Bourdain, it was very early on during my solo backpacking trip. I felt an immediate connection with his values and message. I’m not an extremist like him, but I could relate very easily with his core principles of travel. He breaks down traveling in such a way that it becomes super simple and relatable. Traveling shouldn’t be complex and stressful to begin with, but people have come up with all sorts of ways to complicate travel.

I enjoy getting lost. not using a map when I visit a new city, or at least in the beginning. I love to not plan my days ahead. Go with the flow and always make decisions last minute. Hell I don’t even know what I’m gonna do tomorrow most of the time. That’s real freedom. It’s a weird thing saying this, but it’s almost like I found a master. A master in the sense of having a role model with a lot more experience than myself to look up to. I already live an unconventional lifestyle compared to my peers at home, so finding out about Bourdain was such a joy that sometimes still bring tears to my eyes.

I will never understand how traveling to many countries in a short amount of time has become the standard over visiting one country properly. Traveling through countries isn’t meant to be rushed. It’s meant to be taken as slow as possible. Get to know the morning routines of locals. Get to know what they eat in the evening. Get to know their culture, their rituals, their holidays getaways. Get to know how many drinks they have, how much they smoke. Their personal and family stories on life. This is what I care about, It should be about understanding the locals and how a city or country functions on a daily basis, that’s when you feel like you’ve visited a place properly.
It was never about visiting that one museum or the five highlights and doing that five-star restaurant.

I don’t like this cliché of “Im a traveler not a tourist” but it’s true, being a traveler ends up giving you so much more. It gives the same feeling as taking three espresso shots at once.

We have a long life, rushing will not get you further ahead, it will make you fall short of stories to tell.

@afrikaburn ! It’s been over a month but I still think about it a lot. The most unconventional place i’ve been to because it’s not a festival haha. When they said you can be whoever you want to be in the desert I thought «yeah yeah ill have to see that for myself» and oh boy how right they were.

From being a sheep herder in the morning to looking like a half-naked pancake chef at noon baking pancakes for the people in Tankwa town and ending the day by becoming the nordic winter cowboys at night. Nothing made sense but everything was as it’s supposed to be; random, community built, kind, gifted & no rules. Just freedom.

No sense of time just the sun, following your feelings and gut instinct. Stimulated by the never ending changes around the playa, the stunning artworks, the mutant vehicles entertaining us all from sunrise till sunrise and ofcourse the people.

I’ve always had this enjoyment for randomness, chaos. Even myself I see as quite a random person and this place felt like that too. Like a place that felt like Anything could happen at any time, turn around and you might see a shopping cart as big as your house, an orchestra playing on an airplane wing, bottles of champagne for everyone, Star Wars x Mad Max cars driving everywhere, naked people running around, many tears, many hugs, fire lots of fires and oh did i mention sand lots of sand ? ( Last slide has a surprise 🛝)
