Happy Chinese New Year! The Year of the Fire Horse! In this holiday special, BAG TALK host Elizaveta Federmesser talks to Jiayun Yan (JY) , a scholar of digital cultures specializing in internet phenomena and subcultures in China, and founder of @996_doomscroll, a new media platform on all things China-core. As a fellow fake bag connoisseur, JY weights in on Chinesemaxxing, holistic Guangzhou shopping experience, Martian Language, rural kitch, institutional boyfriend frenzy, counterfeits and character building, night malls, the P brand: Loro Piana, on tiering the gods and fortunetelling, freedom of speech, reducted epstein files, soft madness, collective anonymity on the censored web, staying performative, on why you need a stunt double to be popular, larping as a bureaucrat for romantic gain, and why badminton is hot at the moment. And don’t forget to stay quantum, babe! Blessings! Listen to BAG TALK with Elizaveta Federmesser on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and Substack. @federmess @fabricant_fang @bagmag.official by @fabricant_fang
🕯️WELCOME TO 996 DOOMSCROLL🕯️ This is for the Chinese internet lores, cores and gores. The space that explains how Chinese people scroll, communicate, build, move online. The name comes from the central pressure point around which most subcultures orbit: the 996 work schedule (9am-9pm, 6 days a week) that defines precarity for China’s digital generation. I’m also hoping to build this as a decentralized research platform in the future. I’m always looking for freelance writers, editors, and researchers based in China who want to study the depth of Chinese digital culture. If you’re interested in working together, DM me. by @fabricant_fang
