Seeing Red
Where “Why So Blue” sits in sorrow, “Seeing Red” burns with intensity the color of reclamation and pursuit. Each piece in this limited series submerges its subject entirely in red, using a single palette to hold rage, pride, and awakening at once. A body coated floor to skin in wet paint, a blood moon rising over ancient pyramids, Oyá cradling her sopera vessel inside a gathering storm, a face rendered in dripping, unflinching red that meets the viewer’s gaze head on. The series moves fluidly between figuration and abstraction dense, interlocking forms and bold outlines appear alongside the portraiture, treating color as the connective thread rather than style.

The series is a search for ancient knowledge, for buried history, for a version of the past that hasn’t been filtered through someone else’s lens. It draws on Ifá, the divination system and spiritual tradition of the Yoruba people of West Africa, and on the long-standing belief held by generations of Yoruba historians and scholars that Yoruba tradition carries a deeper connection to ancient Egypt than most conventional histories acknowledge. The storm-bound figure holding a sacred vessel nods to Oyá, the orisha of wind, storms, and fierce transformation the force that clears the old away to make room for what comes next. Recurring symbols crowns, keyholes, locks speak to knowledge that was inherited, hidden, or taken, and to the work of unlocking it again.
Seeing Red isn’t about accepting history as it’s been handed down. It’s about looking again, questioning the framing, seeking out what was left out, and letting that search change the way you see everything after it.

WHY SO BLUE A Print Series

There’s a question we ask without expecting an honest answer: why so blue? It’s small talk. A deflection. A way of naming sadness without having to sit in it.
Why So Blue refuses the deflection.
Rendered entirely in shades of a single colour, this series strips away distraction to focus on what’s left when a person stops performing okay-ness. A man exhales smoke and something heavier through a half-lidded gaze. A family stands together on a shoreline, faces dissolving into abstraction, present in body, elsewhere in mind. Two figures sit shoulder to shoulder, hands pressed to their faces, surrounded by fragments of history they can’t unsee. A woman, blindfolded in pearls, is beautiful and unreachable at once.
Blue becomes more than a palette here; it’s a shared language for grief, fatigue, memory, and the quiet things people carry into rooms and never say out loud. Each piece asks the viewer to stay a little longer than a glance, to look at what’s usually looked away from.
