Kommt zur Uraufführung von Rachel C. Walkers Auftragskomposition „Glosses from a frequency burst“ mit der Sopranistin Nina Guo! ✨

Nina Guo ist Sopranistin, lebt in Berlin und ist Partnerin-in-Crime für alles Zeitgenössische: Musik, Kunst und Radio. Sie trat mit dem Ensemble Modern, der London Sinfonietta und ICTUS sowie bei Festivals wie dem MusikFest Berlin, Tanglewood und dem Club Transmediale auf.
Nina arbeitet interdisziplinär und kollaborativ – zwischen Musik, Performance und bildender Kunst. Mit Künstler:innen wie Petrit Halilaj, Agnieszka Polska und Leonie Brandner verbindet sie eine enge Zusammenarbeit. Nina ist außerdem Schöpferin, Chefautorin und Stimme von „The Entertainment“ auf Cashmere Radio – einer Live-Show, die Comedy und experimentelle Musik verbindet.
Ihr größter Gesangsrivale? Ihre Katze Destroyer.

Nina Guo is a Berlin-based soprano and a vocal collaborator for all things contemporary: music, art, radio. She has performed with Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta and ICTUS, as well as at festivals including MusikFest Berlin, Tanglewood and Club Transmediale.
Her interdisciplinary collaborations span contemporary art and music, working with artists including Petrit Halilaj, Agnieszka Polska and Leonie Brandner. Nina is also the creator, head writer and voice of The Entertainment on Cashmere Radio, a live show combining comedy and experimental music.
Her biggest vocal competitor? Her cat, Destroyer. by @facesound

✨ Wir freuen uns sehr auf die Uraufführung von „Glosses from a frequency burst“!

Hinter der neuen Auftragskomposition steht die Komponistin Rachel C. Walker, deren poetische, klangfarbenreiche Musik von ihrer Auseinandersetzung mit chinesischer Volksmusik, musikalischer Zeitstruktur und Sprache geprägt ist.

Am 24. Oktober wird das Werk von der Sopranistin Nina Guo interpretiert. 🎶

Super happy to show the hand-embroidered tent made for IF ONLY for the first time as part of the exhibition Gossip: Magic and Marginalisation @kasteelwijlre curated by @mrjlnvndrl ✨

The images depicted on the tent are all archival images I have found of the mandrake. The mandrake is a medicinal plant growing in Southern Europe, it was one of the first plants enabling surgeries due to its sleep inducing qualities, it is one of the most prominent so-called magical herbs in Europe and has a wealth of obscure stories growing around for millennia. According to the legend the only way to safely uproot a mandrake is by sacrificing a completely black dog to the plant. The mandrake is also the only European plant continuously depicted as a half-plant-half-human creature.

On the tent depicted are many of the different forms the mandrake has had across time, lots of dogs and lots of hands grabbing for the root collaged together into an enormous embroidery I spent a year stitching stitch by stitch with silver thread onto dark blue cotton fabric.

The piece IF ONLY is on view at Kasteel Wijlre until the end of February 2027 alongside the beautiful work of @projectwilgenvrouwen @dakota.magdalena.mokhammad @shanileseman @broer @luca.soudant @melanie_bonajo and more ✨✨✨

We have wanted to exhibit our film IF ONLY inside the hand embroidered tent I have made for the performance for a long time and we are super excited that this finally happened as part of the wonderful exhibition Gossip @kasteelwijlre curated by the wonderful @mrjlnvndrl
.
The piece IF ONLY is a film installation tackling the ambiguous history of the mandrake plant - one of the best recorded magical herbs in Europe. The images on the tent are archival images of the mandrake itself - the many ways in which the mandrake has been depicted over the ages. There are berries, roots, dogs, root diggers snakes and so many mandrake-bodies and faces.
.
The exhibition Gossip is on for the coming months and shows the beautiful work of @projectwilgenvrouwen @melanie_bonajo @luca.soudant @broer @dakota.magdalena.mokhammad @pleunmoons @_beatricepittman and more 💕. In the images behind our installations are the murals of @shanileseman.

I am super excited to share that the film I made in collaboration with @facesound is on view as part of the exhibition Gossip: Magic and Marginalisation @kasteelwijlre curated by @mrjlnvndrl.

The film is a contemporary take on the millennia old story of the mandragora - a medicinal plant and one of the most prominent magical herbs in Europe. The story of this plant known as the mandragora belief (Alraunglaube) informed about a plant in human form growing where an innocently hung man lost his water. The grown plant, resembling a human-plant-hybrid, was to ensure you had no enemies, bring you luck, money and children if you treated the creature right. The strange story was known all over Europe in the middle ages and the plant was used medicinally for at least 2000 years of human history, yet the story and the medicinal knowledge around the plant vanished from living memory with the beginning in the 19th century.

To revive this ancient tale, we felt like we needed lots of voices. So we were incredibly lucky to have been working with a choir of 40 children and 10 adults over the course of 1 year to make this piece happen.

We are so happy to welcome Nina Guo for the opening performance of the second act of this year’s artistic program!

A high soprano based in Berlin, Nina Guo’s practice spans contemporary music, improvisation, radio, and performance. Humor and radio play are central to her work, where she creates and voices a cast of inventive characters.

As one of today’s most sought-after vocal collaborators, Guo has performed with Ensemble Modern, London Sinfonietta, ICTUS, and at festivals including Musikfest Berlin, Tanglewood, and CTM Festival. Recent projects include the premiere of Jennifer Walshe’s MARS with Irish National Opera, the upcoming release of Morton Feldman’s Three Voices, and collaborations with artists such as Petrit Halilaj, Agnieszka Polska, Annika Kahrs, and Leonie Brandner. In 2025–26, she was featured in two exhibitions at Hamburger Bahnhof in Berlin.

Saadane Afif. Five Preludes Live

Parallel zur Ausstellung Saâdane Afif. Five Preludes (12.12.2025–13.09.2026) im Hamburger Bahnhof @hamburger_bahnhof finden mehrere Performanceabende statt, die in direktem Zusammenhang mit den im Museum gezeigten Werken stehen. Afifs Arbeiten mit ihren vielfältigen Bezügen zur Kunstgeschichte des 20. Jahrhunderts setzen einen Prozess des Betrachtens und Interpretierens in Gang, in den auch Mitwirkende und die Betrachter*innen einbezogen werden. So lädt er Künstler:innen und Schriftsteller:innen ein, in ihren jeweiligen Sprachen poetische Kommentare zu seinen Werken zu verfassen. Eine Auswahl dieser sogenannten „Lyrics“, die in der Ausstellung an den Wänden angebracht sind, wird nun von in Berlin lebenden Musiker:innen live interpretiert. Im Roten Salon werden die von Augustin Maurs vertonten Texte zum Werkkomplex The Fountain Archives von Susanne Fröhlich und Claudia van Hasselt aufgeführt. Im zweiten Teil des Konzerts bilden einzelne Zeilen aus den Lyrics zur Installation Anthologie de l’humour noir den Ausgangspunkt für die Improvisation von Okkyung Lee und Nina Guo.
