All I want to do is read things written by black women, discuss it with black women and then write the stories of black women with other black women.

Today, I wanted to start the day reflecting on the grandmothers, mothers, aunts, and cousins who have mothered and passed on. I also wanted to give thanks and gratitude for the living legends of my family. This country is cruel in general to Black women and a particular kind of cruel if you were from Haiti in the 60s. So these women, our matriarchs, represent 60 years and 4 generations of work, perseverance, unfathomable sacrifice, selflessness, tenacity and love to raise children on two continents, countless countries and states. I’m not a mother yet but if I know anything about motherhood it came first from the hands of these women. If I’m able to hold my own and make a decent wage it’s because they gave up theirs and worked multiple jobs to make ends meet. What I know of lineage and blood is this...where we stand now is because we stand on their shoulders, what we achieve is because and in honor of them. May we make you proud, whatever side of this life your are on because I don’t know what it took to get here but I do know it wasn’t easy. #happymothersday #haitianwomen #haitianmoms #livinglegends #iambecauseyouare #ayiticherie taken in Fort Greene by @facetsofmimi

I woke up and had time to sit with you this morning. I went through all the pictures you kept and I inherited. I realized I hold you suspended in these happy memories. A broad toothsome smile and booming baritone laugh. A brilliant polyglot. A letter writer. A lover of difficult and complex women (we still are). Fiercely loving and hot headed. Sensitive Pisces. A philosopher with a baseball bat. In the year before you died you figured out texting and would text me poetry. I still have your letters and cards. Your favorite lady is still a handful at 72 going on 18, Bou tries to be patient with her. I’m trying my best to honor you with what I do and how I use my words. I feel your presence in everything I do. Thank you for being my first love and showing me what a husband and father should be and gifting me Drew on your birthday. I love you and I miss your physical being every day dad. Happy Father’s Day Papi. taken in Fort Greene by @facetsofmimi

@tessaray721 Happy Birthday Best Friend! Our friendship is 28 years old! It’s survived multiple moves (three states and numerous counties), crushes, broken curfews, secret changing of clothes, changes in phone numbers, overnight shifts, countless come to Jesus convos, millions of hours of conversations big and small, hundreds of shoes (easily hundreds), sickness and health, a pigeoned toed boyfriend who became a husband of over ten years and still counting AND the arrivals of two of the cutest humans known to man. You make all that you do seem seamless when I know it’s not but that’s a testament to who you are and have always been... I’m so blessed to have you, as a best friend and sister. Thank you for you, always and in all ways.

Got plans tonight?! Come out to hear some pretty amazing writers across various genres from the second edition of The Grate. I’ll be performing a poem I wrote dedicated to the Black Birth Workers who inspired the words and everyday do the work to save our mothers. Oh did I mention reading at the Nuyorican has been on my bucket list since I was 21? Because it is, let the rapture come right after I put down the mic! #nuyoricanpoetscafe #thegrate #writersgonnawrite #poetry #bucketlist #les #wordsandthoughts #blackdoula #blackmidwives taken in Nuyorican Poets Cafe by @facetsofmimi

Today in class we spoke about the importance of your last name. It made me think about how I would be letting go of one last name to embrace a new one soon. The discussion made me nostalgic for something I had not yet parted with. After class, as I walked to the train, I noticed the Statue of Liberty. In four months I had never noticed or caught a glimpse of her. I have no particular attachments to the iconography associated with the mythology of America so when I found myself walking over to her I had no clue to what end or why. As I walked I recalled my great uncle Mon Oncle Dorce, my grandfather’s older brother. Mon Oncle Dorce was his familiar name. You know he’s the head of the family when his familiar name is the family last name. I thought about how he came here and saw that same statue upon arrival at Ellis Island. Uncle Dorce was the first of our paternal lineage to come here to the United States, to New York. He brought our last name here and almost 63 years to the day I’ll lay it down to pick up my future name and all it entails. I say all this to say thank you Mon Oncle Dorce and I definitely need a Jr. in that future. A Jr. of my own...yes a child with my name! #sometimesamerican #alwayshaitian #family #haiti #ayiti #ellisisland #straightupnamingnegotiations taken in Statue of Liberty National Monument by @facetsofmimi
