Working directional control is an important part of off leash training. The handler’s job here is to get the dog where he NEEDS to be, that spot is not always where the dog WANTS to be. Through repetition, the dog is conditioned to follow the guidance in order to access the reward. This drill is all about creating a K9 TEAM that works together.

Did you notice the @harddogsrequisites suit the first decoy had on?

Short video with an important message. Dogs thrive when they know the “rules” and clear boundaries are set for them. Living by them can have a positive impact on your relationship with your dog. Whether you have a working dog or a family pet, engage with your dog and teach them to live by your rules. I promise you will be better for it.

If you want a more detailed explanation I can put a longer video in the comments or post it later. Let me know what rules you live by.

There are a lot of tools that can be used to train police K9’s, the hidden sleeve is one of those. When using a hidden sleeve for the first time I want to set the dog up for success while setting the decoy up for safety. Instead of doing a “drag in” where the dog gets a visual of the decoy, we went off lead and started the dog from a position he could smell the decoy but not see him. This young dog looked good. Great decoy work by @alex_oceg using the @dogarmourpro hidden sleeve.

This is a longer video than many people will take the time to watch. I edited out most of the instruction I was giving while the K9 was on the bite and I’ll try to explain what I was working on.

This was during an off leash training course and the first time we were working on physically directing the dog (along with verbal outs). The handler was very active and in the beginning I want that. As the dog begins to follow directions and trust the handler, there will be far less movement by the handler. Eventually the handler should be able to stand in the middle of the area and direct the search. There are 2 decoys and the dog absolutely knows where the decoys he just bit is, so the handler’s job is to make sure the dog goes where he NEEDS to go, not where he WANTS to go.

At the end, the handler leaves with the dog via verbal command and not physical control. If you start this early you can avoid the dog serging when you reach for the collar.

(Garmin Pro 550 is the best collar for LE and military.)

One of the teams that I didn’t need do much troubleshooting on. I worked this team last year @lacpca and this year at the conference they were even better. This lets me know the handler has continued to work with his K9 to improve their skill set.

Just like my last video, I wanted to make sure the dog would be obedient to the handler’s commands and not what the decoy (suspect is doing). The handler gets paid to make those types of decisions, not the dog. Make sure you train in such a way that the dog isn’t taking a guess at what you want them to do.

Another @lacpca video. Two reasons I wanted to share this video. First it’s because it’s BASIC. A verbal out and obedience while the decoy moves (suspects don’t always stay still or move the way they are instructed but that doesn’t mean the dog can be sent). Michael Jordan once said, “Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything will rise.”

Reason 2 is so that @maki_the_terv could see another Belgian Tervuren in action.

As always a shout out the the great decoys @dougroller and I were able to work with @alex_oceg @4sg.k9 and @jds.k9s

#Throw Back Thursday!

It’s not often I use a decoy during range training. The last thing I want is the dog conditioned to get a bite any time there is gunfire. So, this drill was to mimic an OIS with the decoy initiating the incident. You will see that the dog breaks on seeing the decoy and hearing gunfire, the long line was used because we anticipated this. The correction he got was all his fault and a result of his disobedience. Lesson learned. Also, no bite at the end because that is what the real world looks like most of the time.

Negative Punishment is a very powerful tool, especially when you “free shape” the behavior or allow the dog to “self discover” the behavior you want. When I use the technique I describe, I add the “stay” command after the dog learns to stay on its own. KEEP IT SIMPLE!

@lacpca is always a great time. I have the opportunity to work with 30-40 K9 teams over a 4 day period. My goal in working with each team is that they leave with at least one thing they can implement or work on. Some teams are more difficult just because they are already squared away! With this team I was just trying to get his recall to a heel a little cleaner. So, let the dog settle after the bite (forward down him) then bring him to the handler’s side without forcing the dog further away from the decoy.

Worked with great decoys all week @alex_oceg @4sg.k9 @jds.k9s and as always I had the opportunity to work along side one of the best @dougroller

Humbled to stand in front of the handlers at the 25th annual @lacpca conference and share some information. Instinctive (desire) is what sets a great K9 apart from a good K9. You can’t teach heart!
