Every time I start thinking about leaving California, this state finds a way to pull me right back in.

There are just so many layers to this place. Mountains, desert, forests, coastline turn one corner and everything changes.

We took advantage of the three-day weekend and got out of the valley, heading toward Lee Vining and Mono Lake with the Tundra loaded up and the side-by-side in tow.

I understand why everyone loves mountain trails, but there’s just something about the high desert that hits differently for me. Sandy washes, silt beds, rocks, wide-open terrain, and cooler temperatures. It’s hard not to want to stay out there all day.

The Tundra handled the roughly 180-mile drive each way without breaking a sweat. The torque still surprises me, especially towing through the mountains.

The side-by-side didn’t skip a beat either. We put a lot of miles on it, although the endless washboard roads definitely showed me the suspension needs some attention. A @shocktherapyusa tune may be coming soon.

Everything else worked great. The @factory_utv skids took the abuse, the @specialighting Sigma X5s gave us plenty of light, and the @ruggedradios pumpers helped a ton with the dust.

From an off-road standpoint, I couldn’t have asked for much more.

But where did it all go wrong?

Comfort.

Ironically, the baby was probably the most comfortable person in camp. He slept great… which somehow meant we didn’t. 😂

The temperatures got colder than expected, the bees were relentless, and we spent so much time setting up, packing up, and taking care of everything that we never really stopped to sit down and enjoy where we were.

That part stuck with me.

It has me thinking more seriously about building a camper setup that’s a little more live-in friendly for the family. Something that still gets us out into places like this, but gives us a comfortable place to relax, eat, and escape the weather.

The trip wasn’t perfect.

But that’s probably why I want to do it again.

Same area. Same adventure.

OEM skid plates are weak and don’t protect your UTV during off-road operations! Factory UTV fixes this with their UHMW skid plates… either in 1/2” or 3/8”. We have them available for the Polaris Xpedition and other models.

Adrenaline has always introduced me to the best stories. The ones that include long days in the shop, a lot of scratching your head, ending in wide open throttle.
Combine the best of dirt track, rock crawling and desert racing, you’ll reach @ultra4racing . The most challenging & most competitive off-road racing in the world.
