FAC 51: The Haçienda — rare walkthrough footage (Ikon Films)

A rare glimpse inside Manchester’s legendary Haçienda nightclub, filmed by Ikon Films.

This footage offers a unique look at the interior of FAC 51, capturing Ben Kelly’s iconic industrial design, the famous yellow and black aesthetic, the dancefloor, bar areas, and the atmosphere of the club before its later transformations.

More than just a venue, The Haçienda was the physical heart of Factory Records — a space where music, art, design, and Manchester’s culture collided to create something completely unique.

A true time capsule of one of the most important clubs in music history.

Factory wasn’t just a record label.

It was a cultural experiment that connected music, graphic design, architecture, nightlife, and art into one vision.

From Joy Division and New Order to The Haçienda and FAC 251, its influence can still be seen across Manchester and far beyond.

This is the story of Factory.

“Hallelujah, hallelujah
We’re here to pull ya…”

Happy Mondays Hallelujah the club mix that blew the doors off Factory and dragged indie straight onto the dancefloor. Andrew Weatherall and Paul Oakenfold at the controls, twisting the Mondays into a full‑blown acid‑house riot.

This wasn’t a remix. It was a cultural collision.
Baggy swagger meets rave euphoria the sound of Manchester reinventing itself in real time. The Mondays in their prime. Weatherall and Oakenfold at their most fearless. Factory Records letting chaos become history.

It’s 45 years since ACR went into Revolution Studios in Cheadle Hulme, Stockport to record the 1982 album Sextet and it’s 40 years since the release of the 1986 album Force which was also recorded in Stockport but at Yellow 2.

Sextet is ACR’s most critically acclaimed album and it was the first album they produced as ACR, it includes the majestic Lucinda and the live favourite Knife Slits Water.

Force is one of their most commercial albums, produced by ACR and the late Stuart (Jammer) James and is their last album on Factory Records, it includes funky masterpiece Mickey Way and live party favourite Si Firmo O Grido.

Each album is starkly different to each other yet very clearly ACR.

“We’re celebrating these two milestones with this tour to say we are very excited is an understatement. It will be a real challenge, which we’ve already started preparing for, with nine months to go! We will be playing two sets with no support”

Sextet 11 weeks on the UK independent chart and reached No 1

Force spent 9 weeks on the UK independent charts peaking at No. 2.

Sounds 5 star review “SEXTET is an album of the present, killing the past and agreeably ignoring the future. It is an after-Rock Record. This is one of the most strategically tired albums you’ll hear all year. It is also one of the best.”

NME praised Sextet for its "taut, abrasive swagger" and its unique blend of Afro-Brazilian rhythms, dance-funk, and avant-jazz, with tracks like Knife Slits Wate" and Lucinda recognized as masterful, rhythmic post-punk. by @factoryrecords_

Some people make records. Peter Saville made the things you held in your hands while the records played.

“The Factory Records covers were not about making people buy the records. They didn’t even try to make people buy the record. They existed independently to the music, and therefore people’s relationships with them were quite different. The people who liked the covers or became interested in the covers saw them as possessions - they learnt through them, things they maybe didn’t know before.” Peter Saville

#OTD 9th of October in 1955, Peter Saville was born in Manchester, Lancashire, England. 71 today.

Tony Wilson met him after a bad Patti Smith gig, and two weeks later Saville turned up with a book on Jan Tschichold. “Peter was cleverer than me,” Wilson wrote years later.

Saville never pretended the sleeves were about the bands: “It was about things that I saw and wished were part of my reality,” he told Dezeen. When he said in Berlin in 2012 that he hadn’t thought about the music while designing New Order’s covers, Bernard Sumner shot back: “And we didn’t think about the sleeves when we recorded the music.” Peter Hook has said they’d have been fine releasing the records “if it came in a paper bag.”

Out of that happy disconnect came Closer, with Bernard Pierre Wolff’s photograph of the Appiani family tomb in Genoa’s Staglieno cemetery.

And the kids who grew up staring at those sleeves took notes. Suede’s Brett Anderson, per the Design Museum, was obsessed with Saville’s Factory work as a teenager and later hired him for Coming Up. Jarvis Cocker says Saville and John Currin “probably taught me more about art than I learned in art school.” OMD’s Andy McCluskey called him “a kindred spirit.”

Happy birthday, Peter. Thanks for all the things we got to keep.

Today’s soundtrack: Joy Division, New Order, OMD,Durrutti Column ,Pulp and Suede.

FACT 26 – Durutti in Paris

Planned for 27 April 1980 at the Bataclan in Paris, FAC 26 was a Factory Records event featuring The Durutti Column, A Certain Ratio, Section 25 and A Boy Alone (Eric Random).

The show was cancelled before it took place, but seven posters had already been printed. Designed by Stephen Horsfall, with the concept by Alan Erasmus, the silver-on-black poster is now one of the rarest early Factory artefacts.

Factory later referred to FAC 26 as the “Paris video show”. The reason for the cancellation isn’t clearly documented.

FACT 25, Joy Division’s second and final studio album, released on 18 July 1980.

Recorded with Martin Hannett at Britannia Row Studios in London in March 1980, Closer was released two months after Ian Curtis’ death.

The album contains nine tracks, including “Atrocity Exhibition”, “Isolation”, “Heart and Soul”, “Twenty Four Hours”, “The Eternal” and “Decades”.

The sleeve was designed by Peter Saville and Martyn Atkins, featuring a photograph by Bernard-Pierre Wolff of a tomb in the Cimitero Monumentale di Staglieno in Genoa, Italy.

The original Factory pressing came in a distinctive textured sleeve, with later pressings using a different finish. The album was also later issued on cassette as FACT 25C and on CD as FACD 25.

FACT 25 sits right in the middle of one of the most important periods in the Factory catalogue, coming directly after FACT 24, A Factory Quartet, and shortly before the final Joy Division releases and the beginning of New Order.
