Happy 119th birthday to Gladys Bentley (1907-1960), a genre-bending blues singer and drag king who was known as one of the most powerful and provocative performers of the Harlem Renaissance. Sometimes taking the stage name of Bobbie Minton, Gladys was known for taking lyrics of popular songs and making them raunchier, and for openly singing about sapphic love, with drag queens as her backup singers. While societal pressures led Gladys to closet herself later in life, we continue to honor Gladys Bentley as a queer ancestor who paved the way for future generations of queer and gender-nonconforming BIPOC <3 by @fagjazz

For this week’s ✨Artists In Our Network ✨, we had the amazing opportunity to chat with @fagjazz a queer and trans POC-led collective based and founded in Oakland, CA. Check out below for learn more ⬇️

🎶 What most deeply influences FAGJAZZ?

FAGJAZZ is first and foremost an homage to all our queer and trans ancestors within the greater definition of jazz music. From Billy Strayhorn to Billy Tipton, Gladys Bentley to Ma Rainey and Bessie Smith, FAGJAZZ not only honors those who came before us, but strives to carry on the illustrious tradition of fagjazzing.

🎶 What do you want folks to understand about FAGJAZZ?

FAGJAZZ was created for queer musicians/artists to connect, collaborate, and support each other outside of cisheteronormative spaces. The first release, The Strayhorn Sessions Vol. 1, celebrates the life and music of one the most cherished queer ancestors: Billy Strayhorn.

Beyond the record label FAGJAZZ RECORDS and the FAGJAZZ ensemble, FAGJAZZ also hosts regular showcases, jams, workshops, and community hangs. The goal of the collective is to uphold the long-standing tradition of queer folks coming together to foster community and make great art.
