UWSP’s Cornerstone Press to Launch Newest Poetry Collection

November 9, 2021

Cornerstone Press, the student-staffed teaching press at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, will launch its newest book, a collection of poetry, on November 18, 2021.

Cornerstone Press will release Careful Cartography by Connecticut author Devon Bohm at 6pm CST on November 18, 2021 via a Zoom webinar. A link to the webinar will be sent via email to attendees who sign up through Cornerstone Press’s Google Form (https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScy7Nj2wg9QXKzYkpDmwj4EBZLElJFLDgBQYD_MS4YdCYIwMw/viewform?usp=sf_link). The event will feature a question and answer session with the author and a round table discussion of Sparks and Disperses along with two other titles being launched at the same webinar.

Careful Cartography is a part of the Portage Poetry Series, and it is currently available for pre-order at www.uwsp.edu/cornerstone, and will also be available for pre-order during the launch on November 18. For more information, visit @uwspcornerstonepress on Facebook.

The striking debut collection from Devon Bohm doubles life writing and poetry. With her detailed geographic narrative, Bohm plots out her autobiography through both external and internal landscapes. Strong in style and voice, these impactful free verse poems create a map through wordscapes that equate to topographical locations and depict a search that culminates in the most elusive and unmappable of locations: a home.

“Careful Cartography was an incredible journey to go on with Devon Bohm,” said Kala Buttke, the press’s editorial director. “As her editor I felt like I was right there with her through the landscapes, regions, and the search for a home described in Bohm's strong, confident style.” With several new titles being released each semester, students gain industry experience working with writers from all over the United States. “I've loved promoting our upcoming publications,” said Bethany Webb, the press’s social media manager, “and it has been really rewarding to interact with the authors and see their excitement for their books.” by @fairfieldumfa

It's exciting to see galleys of my book out in the world. The Rib King comes out on January 19th and is available to pre-order now! It's a historical novel set in the early twentieth century that deconstructs African American stereotypes that emerged out of the minstrel entertainment tradition at the turn of the last century. Check out the link in my bio to learn more.

I underestimated how much this semester would sit my little tushy down in front of a computer. I haven’t been hiking since October and my bones know it. They’ve been creaking and begging me to go outside. On Sunday they’ll get what they want. But I don’t regret it because not only have I focused on work, moving, and a huge master’s project… I’ve also been working with two literary magazines and I’ve learned so much!
📚
For years I would sit down in front of a computer for hours and read Brevity. It’s been around for more than 20 years and never in my life did I think that I would be affiliated with it, and now I’m working with the team and sometimes I’m left wondering… did this really happen? Is this really happening? How did I get here?! I get to read the submissions, discuss pieces with the team and analyze what works and doesn’t… I’ve grown so much as a writer and I’m so excited to continue working with them until my last semester. My first essay for 2020 will drop on the Brevity Blog in January, but in the meantime go check out the latest issue on brevitymag.com and the daily essays/interviews on the blog: brevityblog.com
📚
Along with @kristendalli, I am one of the co-Editors in Chief of Causeway Lit. We both started out as readers in our first semester and became EIC now in our third semester. I manage the social media and posts on the site. I keep on learning about Submittable and WordPress every day and there are also many screams of frustration during this learning process. Again, I love reading the submissions, working with a team and managing a lit mag. It wasn’t until the last issue went live that it clicked that all three of the genre winners were women (DOWN WITH THE PATRIARCHY!). So I will be EIC for two more issues of @causewaylit, and then we’ll pass on the baton to a group of other @fairfieldumfa students. 📚
I can’t wait to read your stories. Submit to both Brevity and Causeway if you get the chance! And please share with your writer friends, especially if they are underrepresented writers or just starting out. by @fairfieldumfa
