We've been seeing great progress on the sidewalk renovations around the J. Harper Meredith Building, but the next few days will affect access to the building's entrances.

Starting tomorrow, Oct. 8th, the main entrance to the J. Harper Meredith Building will be closed due to the sidewalk work. This will also affect the accessible parking outside of the main entrance.

However, the sidewalk work at the second-floor entrance will be complete, and we have added additional accessible parking along Jefferson Street to improve access for those with mobility challenges. Please use the second-floor entrance until work is complete on Oct. 13th (weather permitting).

We will post updates as they become available! by @fairmontwv

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! October 26th-30th, Republic Services will be collecting additional household waste and bulky goods such as furniture, TVs, computers, and mattresses (mattresses must be wrapped in plastic). These bulk pickups will happen in conjunction with your normal trash pickup service.

Take this opportunity to get rid of things you do not want that cannot be donated elsewhere! Please put items curbside on your regular collection day.

Items not accepted include construction debris, tires, car batteries, large appliances, motor oil, and any other potentially hazardous materials.

Any questions about accepted items can be directed to Republic Services at 304-366-8900.

This is for homes in Fairmont City Limits ONLY. Please contact your municipality for dates where you live if you are not in the Fairmont City Limits. by @fairmontwv

Big news for Fairmont and our first responders! The City of Fairmont Fire Department has been awarded $246,117 through FEMA’s Assistance to Firefighters Grant to launch the CATCH FiRe program, a major wellness and health initiative serving all 41 of our full-time firefighters.

Because firefighting involves frequent exposure to occupational hazards, this program provides comprehensive annual medical evaluations, early cancer screenings, physical fitness tracking, and expanded behavioral health support. By investing in early detection and preventive care, we are protecting the men and women who protect our community every day.

We are incredibly grateful for the support of our federal delegation and our regional partners, including WVU Medicine, in securing and sustaining this vital program. by @fairmontwv

Last Monday, City Manager Travis Blosser was asked to speak as part of the program for the ribbon cutting at Kibar Americas. In his speech, he highlighted the resilence of Fairmont's industry and how similar it is to the metal at the heart of Kibar's operation. Give his full remarks a listen! by @fairmontwv

Tonight, Fairmont City Council will meet for its regular meeting at 7 p.m. in the Public Safety Building on Quincy Street.

Below is a summary of the items up for consideration by City Council:

1. First is a public hearing and subsequent consideration of an ordinance providing for a lease to Lamar Companies to place electronic billboards on City-owned property in exchange for the removal of several other billboards. Council originally postponed this ordinance until the question of zoning variances was heard by the City’s Board of Zoning Appeals, however, that board has not yet made a decision on the matter. Council may table the item again, or opt to call a vote.
2. A public hearing and subsequent vote to update the City’s published code with updated pages changed by ordinances passed in the last several months. This is a routine ordinance.
3. A public hearing and subsequent vote on the establishment of an agreement between the City of Fairmont and the Marion County Commission to provide the Marion County Sheriff’s Office a portion of the City’s Justice Assistance Grant for use in the Sheriff’s Project Lifesaver program.
4. A first reading and introduction of an ordinance enacting an MOU between the City of Fairmont and the Marion County Board of Education for the demolition of a structure owned by the Board on a property near Watson Elementary. If passed by both Council and the Board, this agreement would allow the City to demolish the structure under its existing demolition contract and then be reimbursed for the costs by the Board of Education.
5. An introduction and first reading of an ordinance providing the City Manager with authority to issue an extension on the contract with Republic Services for waste collection services in the City of Fairmont. The extension runs until March 31, by which time the City plans to have issued a new bid and contract for the services. This agreement extension includes a rate increase.
6. A routine resolution endorsing the annual Feast of the Seven Fishes, allowing the event organizers to apply for a Fair and Festival license through the WV ABCA.
7. A re-appointment to the Fairmont Building Commission. by @fairmontwv

While he wasn't able to make it to the official ribbon-cutting yesterday, we wanted to also thank Del. Phil Mallow for presenting the City with a check as part of the West Virginia House of Delegates' Legislative Economic Development Assistance program in the amount of $5,000, which will offset the costs of the Rotary Club of Fairmont Mini Park improvements.

We've also included some more photos of the park's massive improvements; we couldn't be happier with the end result. by @fairmontwv

This afternoon, we cut the ribbon on the amazing transformation at the Rotary Club of Fairmont Mini Park! This park has been a playground for generations of East Siders, and now it's refreshed and reimagined for future generations to come.

Of course, we needed some help breaking in the new equipment; thankfully, the Kindergarten students from East Park Elementary were more than happy to lend their services. We hope you'll come check out the park soon!

Special thanks to the Rotary Club of Fairmont, WV, for their contributions to this park and to our very own Public Works Department crews, who did almost every improvement in this park in-house. by @fairmontwv

Join us TOMORROW, Sept. 16th at 1 p.m. as we cut the ribbon on the new and improved Rotary Club of Fairmont Mini Park!

Formerly known as the Morgantown Avenue Mini Park, this park is unrecognizable, with updated play equipment and a refreshed paint job on all of the park's classic mainstays 🐢🐬

We hope you'll join the City of Fairmont and the Rotary Club of Fairmont as we officially unveil these improvements. by @fairmontwv
