In solidarity with @falloffreedom, we’re open today and tomorrow, from noon to 6pm!

On view in our gallery, “Whose America?” draws upon the pluralistic wellspring of experience by artists hailing from countries throughout North America, Central and South America and the Caribbean, all of which are underpinned by Indigenous people’s historic ties to the land that precede the founding of this country. The exhibition features work by dozens of artists from countries including Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Cuba, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.

“Whose America?” is curated by Natalia Viera Salgado, Associate Curator, and Gee Wesley, Guest Curator.

Dancing at the Louvre
Acrylic, fabric, and marker
73.5 x 80

I chose this piece for two reasons. First, I love when materials historically dismissed as “craft” are recognized as fine art. Second, you currently can’t go a day without hearing about the Louvre.

In her series, The French Collection, Ringgold follows an imagined character, Willa Marie Simone, through a full narrative arc across many Story Quilts. This piece was the first in the series. In it, Willa Marie dances with her children in front of Da Vinci and Botticelli.

“In The French Collection Series I seized the opportunity to paint in the manner of Van Gogh, Matisse, Monet, and Picasso, as I had tried to do when I was a student. But now I had a story to tell about a young black woman who went to Paris at age sixteen to become an artist and never to return to America. As the story goes, Willia Marie becomes a successful artist and makes a name for herself in the modern art movement and exchanges ideas with the great artists of her time.”

It’s often read as an act of resistance; intentionally claiming joy and taking up space in unwelcoming places—and also about the balance between motherhood and a creative life. By the end of the series, Willia Marie sends her children back to the US while she stays in Paris to focus on her life as an artist.

Ringgold’s epic work combines three mediums I love: fiber arts, painting, and storytelling. She passed away last year at the age of 93.

Follow @turningpainttopower for more about artists who process their struggles by creating, and in doing so, turn their pain—and paint—into power.

This is a belated but heartfelt gratitude post.

When I learned that my current role included curating exhibitions that celebrate children’s picture book artists, I knew exactly who the dream artist for my first exhibition would be: @faithringgold. Pairing clear-eyed criticality with hope, Faith Ringgold’s children’s books offer narratives that speak directly to our current moment, inviting us all to be more truthful, curious, and empathetic.

Exhibitions are group projects, and this one wouldn’t have happened without the brilliance and dedication of the incredible @highmuseumofart team. Huge thanks to everyone in collections and exhibitions, communications, curatorial, development, operations, finance, and (of course!) the world-class learning and civic engagement team. It’s an honor to work with such thoughtful, creative people each day.

I cannot overstate how grateful I am to the family and estate—especially Barbara Wallace, Michelle Wallace, and Faith Wallace-Gadsden—for their support of this project, along with the inimitable Sharon Ullman!

Special thanks to each person who encouraged me along the way to take risks, lean into the work of curating as an educator, and invite more folks to engage with the truth and grace that Faith Ringgold’s books share.

I also want to thank @emellotron. Building the Ringgold reading room with you at the New Museum planted the seed for this.

“Faith Ringgold: Seeing Children” is now open @highmuseumofart and is on view until October 12. Come see it! Send me pics (if I’m not there to greet you in person) and let me know what you think! See the delightful musical the @alliancetheatre commissioned in conjunction with the exhibition! And keep an eye out, because soon we’ll be sharing more: this exhibition will be going on tour :)
