The Grove of Stone Trees had been undisturbed in the middle of the Forest of the Lost for over a century. This was the case until a young boy, Sel, found it. Fascinated by the trees, he kept returning to it over and over again. The deity that watched over the grove was very amused by the boy and decided to bless him with the power of magic. Sel became obsessed with learning how to use the newfound power he had been blessed with, he could make vines sprout from the ground, flowers bloom from his hands, and so much more. Growing tired of his life in the cities and towns, he decided to become a Druid of the Stone Trees. Decades have passed since Sel received his powers, and now he sits upon a stone under the largest of the trees, meditating and listening to the world around him. His fame had spread further than he had expected, and he now had people seeking him out to become his disciples and learn from him, adventurers were always pesky like that. Sel had only ever left the Forest of the Lost a handful of times; the longest was for nine years when he was recruited by the hero’s party to fight the Demon King. Now, Sel remained in the forest, watching the trees and ensuring that the beauty around him would never fade.

The air was still in the hallways of Castle Fonrel. The king was in his study chamber when he heard a thud out in the hallway. Opening the door, he saw a blur of blue streaking toward him, and before he could even say a word, all the breath was knocked out of him by the cold steel plunging into his chest. The blue-hooded figure stood before him, her weapon dripping in his and his guard’s blood, as she turned and walked away. The Order of the Blue Rose was formed by a sect of knights whose king had been betrayed and cast out. While it is a knightly order, the members of the Blue Rose do not wear heavy armor or have a standard uniform; they all wear a blue cloth around their faces to protect their identities.

The moon was red as Goolath crawled out of the portal. He stood in some kind of laboratory covered in potions and grimoires, and there was even some kind of ooze dripping from a pipe. The creature kneeling before him had silvery skin and pointed ears; Goolath could faintly remember another higher being creating a race of creatures like that thousands of years ago. He had stepped from the astral realm into this simplistic place full of emotion and death. Goolath had been here before to help against some kind of demon war, and he wondered how long it had been. The creature before him began to chant and held a sword up as if wanting some kind of blessing. An idea came to Goolath as the creature bowed before him: how long had it been since a new demon king was in this plane of existence? Goolath held out his hand and his staff formed, then he removed a small stone from its base. He placed the stone directly into the forehead of the being before him. The creature began convulsing as mana overflowed from its body. When it stood, its eyes glowed purple. Satisfied, Goolath stepped back and looked forward to the show that was about to unfold.

The party was full of hustle and bustle as Talanel entered the great hall with his fellow party members. A sense of uneasiness washed over him, as if he had stood in this very room before in a different lifetime. The night felt like a blur. Talanel retreated out to the courtyard to get some fresh air. That is when he felt it—a wave of necrotic mana flowing over his entire body. His head snapped toward its wielder. Before him stood a figure clad in black steel armor, with silver etching across the breastplate and arms. He held beside him a massive axe, made of stone and metal. The quiet evening filled with a cold, still air as Talanel faced the being before him. A moment that felt like an eternity passed, and then the hooded warrior lunged at Talanel, black smoke trailing behind the figure. Talanel slammed his walking stick into the ground, and his staff sprung to life as he deflected the heavy axe below. He then felt the presence of the man with blue eyes of fire. A moment later, Talanel screamed as a wave of blue flames erupted from his arm and engulfed his body. He felt as if he was being stabbed by thousands of needles; then, just as fast as it had come, it disappeared, and a new vigor was instilled in his body. He charged forward at the hooded warrior and slammed his staff down, breaking the shaft of the axe with the force and dispelling the dark smoke that cloaked the figure’s body. Before Talanel had a chance to deal a finishing blow, the man before him disappeared and a new set of footstepsapproached. A chill ran down Talanel’s spine. He had not heard those unmistakable footsteps since he escaped the tower.

Unfortunately for the Tyrian Company, the entire plan to get into the vault of the Mad King now hinged on a fancy dinner party. Talia and Talanel reluctantly dressed for the occasion while Nola buzzed about, excited for a chance to show off her most fabulous cape yet! The Life Day celebration: the one day a year when the Mad King sends all the guards away and gives the entire kingdom an open invitation: Try to kill me, and my kingdom is yours. Fewer and fewer try each year, but the dinner party still goes strong.

As they navigated the crowded room, Talia pulled at the edges of the already uncomfortable petticoat, trying to keep an eye on Nola so that she didn’t get lost. Nola had the plans, and the idea was simple: Get through the party and downstairs to the vault with as few people noticing as possible. She bent down to adjust a strap on her boot, but taking an eye off the crowd was a mistake. Frantically scanning for her friends, her eyes locked onto another familiar face instead. One that immediately knocked the wind right out of her. The room spun as she frantically pushed through the crowd to get to him.

Talanel stumbled through the crowded room alone, relying on the guidance of the mana inside him to stop him from smashing into another guest. As he turned a corner, looking for his friends, he felt a presence he hadn’t felt since the last time he was in this very place. A dark, manic, hooded presence, holding a large axe.

“Come back to play, Holy One?”

The cleric straightened up on his newly-fashioned leg and held out his walking stick, the illusion magic revealing his staff.

“Enough words. You know why I’m here.”

The cloak figure chuckled. “Revenge, I suppose?”

“Cleansing.”

Talanel closed his eyes, feeling the power inside him surge with raw emotion. Unable to hold back his anguish, he screamed, sending a blast of light from his staff at his foe.

“Why exactly are we fighting again?”

The harlequin thief pouted, parrying attack after attack from Nola without so much as changing her by @falcon_figs

The fishmen of the Monster Sea are some of the most respected warriors and hunters in the realm. Ka was new to the southern islands of Kalitha and had come down to hunt a gemstone leviathan that had been hindering ocean fishing for the locals. This was his first hunt outside of his native territory, and he was itching to get information and head back out onto the ocean; the walls of the forest capital of Kalitha gave him the chills. Ka stepped into the adventurers’ guild to seek out the guild leader, who had posted the notice to a wider region. Ka smiled as he saw a plethora of fishmen present who had also answered the summons. While Ka had experience hunting alone, hunting a leviathan of this size was often best done with a medium to large group of people. There were also several humans and elven mages joining the crew in order to provide support and record academic findings during the hunt. Ka adjusted his spear and set his belongings on the table beside him as the huge half-orc guild leader began informing the group of the plan for the coming weeks.

Baylor was just one of many in the mercenary corps as they headed to the fields of Yethrill. He had been born in the slums of One Move; the dwarf fortress cities were often filled with refugees and vagabonds from all over the realm, whether they were humans or even elves. Baylor had not enjoyed his life as a street urchin, and as soon as he was able to make a little bit of money, he abandoned that life in search of a new one out in the wider world. While he had no formal training with the sword, or with any other weapon, he had gained his fighting skills from history’s greatest teacher: experience. From the young age of 13, he was cleaning off the weapons and grime of the mercenaries who had just returned from battle. By 15, he was handed his first spear and shield to stand on the front lines against the Demon King’s army. Most recently, at 25, he achieved his first great feat on the battlefield when he helped one of the local lords who hired him defeat a manticore. Baylor was now on the journey back to the mercenary corps’ headquarters to collect his payment and inform his boss about the internal workings of the region.

The war against the demons has lasted for more than half a millennium. Only the oldest of elves remember the start of the war. Sir Aluin was in the second wave of elves to step up and fight the demon hordes. He was still green behind his pointy ears when the demons decimated half of the continent with a magic bomb that spread an unyielding plague. The surviving races joined together to stop the demonic army’s advance. A stalemate has been reached, where both sides have fortified the mountain ranges and the valley between has become a wasteland of death. Sir Aluin was in charge of a stronghold within the marshlands of the mountain range, where a river provided critical access to the valley for the forces of good. While he has not stepped onto the fields of battle in over a century, he still trains the knights and warriors of his stronghold. Having seen the peak of the war, he understands how critical it is to have properly trained troops. He was among the last knights who defended the valley stronghold before it fell, his leading knight commander had been too lax in his duties and never thought the demons could get past the mountains. Sir Aluin had lost most of his closest friends that day.

Garth stood at the cliff’s edge and looked out over the small village below. He had been living in the mountains since the village was just a lone inn on empty land. Garth had been a great adventurer in his youth, but now he was simply an old man in the boonies. He had fought dragons, dark wizards, and even other humans, but he had no interest in that anymore, now Garth just wanted to enjoy a quiet life. The adventurers of the realm had other ideas, though. People were constantly coming to his rural home, hoping Garth would train them. Garth had never seen himself as a standout teacher for those he had trained in the past, but there seemed to be a trend of greatness that followed his students after they left his care. The reason he had recently experienced such an influx of people wanting to learn from him was that one of his former students had just become the Knight Commander in the Kingdom of Wreathbrook. Garth smiled as he saw yet another horse coming up the mountain. He recognized the man sitting atop the steed: it was the very man who had caused him all this recent trouble. Garth stood and walked back toward his home to prepare dinner for the two of them.
