You have probably seen her before: the ‘Princess' of Xiaohe, a mummy so well-preserved she still has her eyelashes. With her large felt hat and fine clothing and jewelry, this 3,800 year old beauty is incredibly striking.

She was found with 12 others in the Tarim Basin in Northwestern China. The very dry and salty environment allowed for their bodies to decay so slowly, much remains, including featuring the oldest cheese ever found.

Here we see a wonderfully dramatic self-portrait by artist Artemisia Gentileschi. The Italian Baroque painter was born into a world of art with a famous painter as a father whom she helped mix paints as a young child. Not one to let her gender hold her back, she was the first woman to enroll at the Fine Art Academy in Florence.

Please also check out her fantastically bloody painting of the biblical Judith and Holofernes.

I recently came across the work of artist / illustrator Lindsey Carr. As a programmer she also creates video installations, which seems a nice contrast/ addition to her intriguing oil paintings.

Her elaborate floral compositions remind me of Georgia O’Keeffe’s sensuality. The organic shapes and colors seem to flow on the canvas and I especially like the shiny details that add to the textures she creates in oil paint.

As an illustrator she works primarily in water colour producing designs for textiles, book covers and more.

Born in the Philippines, Texas-based Fatima Ronquillo is a self-taught artist that gets her inspiration from literature, theatre and opera.

Ronquillo uses old master techniques to create her intriguing paintings of "a world where art history meets with imagined characters” with a dash of Latin-American magical realism.

Her paintings have been likened "to jewels, as they are meticulously painted in a style that is reminiscent of the European Old Masters, with nearly iridescent subjects often posing before Arcadian landscapes.”

Portuguese artist Paula Rego (1935 – 2022) often based her works on storybooks and folklore to explore feminist themes.

This expressionistic pastel of Snow White done in 1995 presents an image very different from the sugar-coated fairytale figure made famous by the Disney classic.

We see, Snow White in innocent white, but the deer head positioned in her lap creates a sense of unease. There seems to be a lot of symbolism at work here, and I am puzzled by the small woman in the background. Is she jealous, or does she perhaps disapprove of the scene?

I really like how Snow White's face appears confident and curious, even though her legs are too short to reach the floor.

The Florence born American painter John Singer Sargent (1856 – 1925) is one of my absolute favorites and I have posted several of his masterful paintings on fftt (including the scandalously delicious Madame X). If I was offered a wish, it might be to have my portrait painted by Singer Sargent.

Many wealthy Americans did just that and one of the first people to do so was Isabella Stewart Gardner, an art collector and philanthropist who founded her own museum - for the education and enjoyment of the public forever - in Boston.

The result was this striking full-length painting of her in black dress set against a dramatic background, almost like a saint or icon surrounded by a halo.

Apparently her husband was not happy with it... but the work also inspired a contemporary to remark: "I never saw anything so daring, so splendid, so really great as your portrait. It is first, great as a likeness, after that it is everything enthralling. . . . A mysterious + awful power is in that same Mr. Sargent"

Formally trained in photography and then fine art, Sarah Jarrett Art, works as a collage artist, fusing digital and analog processes to create beautiful, mysterious images that I find very intriguing. Often portraits “depicting women with an underlying sadness and emptiness, wearing a mask that is fleeting and fades. She wants her work “to provoke an emotional response and for the viewer to be intrigued by the process behind it. [She is] constantly exploring identity and beauty and suggesting a story behind the image.”

She calls herself a “visual magpie” and I think I will start using that term for myself, as it is a very fitting description. On her website she writes David Lynch and Philip Pullman as longtime inspirations. I think we would get a long as a house on fire.

This works is called 'The Hyacinths'

Fascinating image with the great title 'Bon Appétit Bloody Mary' by Iranian artist Afarin Sajedi

I love the pose, the hair, the colored finger tips and am seriously wondering about the religious connotation of the fish and the blood...

On her website, the artist writes that "she draws theatrical characters, colorful face like a clown, inspire of Japanese theater or use symbols of western religious art but in the face of the contemporary world. Her characters are usually royal, proud, and silent with a deep look. The fish symbolizes most of her artworks and makes them closer to the surreal or pop surrealism styles."

I can definitely see that coming together in this painting

Dreamy film still of the stylish Hungarian actress Zsa Zsa Gabor (1917 - 2016) as the character Jane Avril in the 1952 Moulin Rouge, directed by John Huston.

French can-can dancer Jane Avril (1868 – 1943) worked at the famous Moulin Rouge in Paris in the late 1890s. Avril was known for her unusual style, which was described as "an orchid in a frenzy […] nervous and neurotic, the captivating flower of artistic corruption and of sickly grace." She may have been suffering from the movement disorder known "St Vitus' Dance, with symptoms that include tics, rhythmic swaying and limb jerking, which could have been the inspiration for her idiosyncratic style. Her nickname was La Mélinite, an explosive

At the cabaret night club she befriended painter Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (1864 - 1901) who painted her many times, including this famous poster

'Mushroom Girl' by Kiko Capile. In drawings done with pen in incredible detail, this Philippine artist seems interested in showing us what lies underneath.

Surreal and macabre, his figures shows their true colors pulsing, alive, and often disturbing. This work is still quite innocent, but do check him out. Intriguing stuff
