Ross Devlin @fallsglen and I spent a week observing a team of archaeologists excavating a Roman site perched high above the ancient Via Salaria in the Appenines. The site in Castel Sant Angelo, province of Rieti, is known today as Villa di Tito, for its supposed association with the Roman Emperors Vespasian and Titus.

We collected our accumulated material from our week at the site, including writing, drawings, film-stills, and scans from the archaeologist’s notebooks, developing them at Beauroma Books into this beautiful riso-printed publication. The work charts a sub-aqueous journey: through the aperture of a well unearthed at the site, into the eye of a nearby lake, Lago di Paterna, associated with a cult of the Sabine Goddess Vacuna, and through the chambers of an abandoned swimming pool, a failed regeneration project in the nearby town of Antrodoco.

Sei Qui, 2026. A single channel artist film by Ross Devlin and Danny Leyland, made while investigating a live archaeological site at Castel Sant’Angelo in the province of Rieti, Italy.

Set within the rich archaeological landscape of the Sabina region, Sei Qui charts a subaqueous descent through watery apertures, umbilical passages, and derelict chambers, mapping a geography of dreams, offerings, and ritual renewal.

A team of archaeologists led by the Canadian duo Dr. Myles McCallum of Saint Mary’s University, and Dr. Martin Beckmann of McMaster University, have been excavating a monumental archaeological structure constructed on a high terrace wall, a place known today as Villa di Tito for its supposed association with the Emperor Titus (79 – 81 CE). The complex is perched high on the mountainslope above the Via Salaria, an important ancient road which spans from the West coast up along the valley floor and into the Apennines.

The artists were particularly fascinated by the round structure of a well that had been excavated at the site, in which a collection of ritual objects had been uncovered by the archaeologists. And also by the mysterious Lago di Paterna, a small, round, turquoise lake, very deep, that lies at the foot of the mountain slope, that in ancient times was considered to be the naval of Italy, and was associated with a cult of the Goddess Vacuna.

Sei Qui was presented at the British school at Rome for the Summer Open Studios. Here are some stills from that film.
