Nathan Gill, Senior Professional Scout and Talent ID Coach at Arsenal FC Academy, speaks as someone from the community and his message is direct - we need to do more to bring ourselves to the forefront and bang on the door.

He acknowledges the door has not always been open for South Asians in football, with negative stereotypes, a lack of reference points and other ongoing barriers.

However, Nathan also believes we have become a little disillusioned with the game and too comfortable with the small space we currently occupy. The talent is there, he references a PFA event a couple of years ago with around 100 academy kids of South Asian heritage from across the country, and his point is clear, there can be so many more if we are unafraid to be vulnerable, put ourselves in the window and support each other along the way.

Nathan also calls out the importance of platforms like Brown Town Rising in shining a light on what exists in the South Asian football landscape and how we get to where we need to be.

It's that time of year when young players are being released from academies. Nathan Gill, Senior Professional Scout and Talent ID Coach at Arsenal FC Academy, has a message for every single one of them.

You are not alone - 99% of young academy players get released at some point, whether that's at 9s, 10s, 12s, 14s, 16s or 18s, or even after making it to the first team. Everyone's journey is different and nothing is linear.

Nathan points to the proof. Declan Rice was released by Chelsea at 14. Eberechi Eze was released by Arsenal and moved through Fulham and Millwall before landing at QPR. Both are now Premier League champions worth hundreds of millions, just over a decade on from those moments.

Football is a game of opinions, not facts. The end of your chapter at one club is not the end of your story.

Around 0.02% of the population will become a professional footballer. Around 0.2% to 0.5% will become a lawyer. Both are less than a percent of the population, but only one of those dreams gets shut down at the dinner table.

Why do we tell kids to chase law but not football?

Nathan's message to young players and the parents backing them; set your standards high.

Football gives you attributes and life skills that go far beyond the game itself. Education and football can go hand in hand.

An incredible experience spending time last week at arguably the most renowned talent-producing club in world football - Sport Lisboa e Benfica. A club that has generated over €500M in academy player sales across the last decade alone, but more importantly, one built on a deeply embedded philosophy and identity around player development.

Proud to have graduated from the University of Portsmouth with a GradCert in Football Leadership and Management, delivered in collaboration with the Premier League.

As somebody who can be guilty of continuously focusing on improving and the next target, I’m trying my best to momentarily pause and reflect on a meaningful milestone in my journey within football leadership and development.

Academy leadership requires clarity of vision, strategy, culture, governance, and the ability to lead people through complexity. Grateful for the learning, the people, and the opportunity to grow my understanding around these pillars.
