A technical director is one of the most important football roles fans rarely talk about.

They help shape the club’s football identity, connect the first team with the academy, support coaching decisions, and make sure recruitment fits the bigger plan.

The head coach focuses on matches, training, and tactics.

The technical director looks at the wider football structure.

#FNFRewind | When Arsenal Reached the First Division Without Winning Promotion 🔴

In 1919, Arsenal entered the First Division through a club vote despite not finishing in a promotion place. Tottenham went down, Arsenal went up, and they have never been relegated from the English top flight since.

#FNFRewind | When Everton Left Anfield and Liverpool Were Born 🔴🔵

Before Liverpool existed, Anfield was Everton’s home. A dispute over the ground pushed Everton to Goodison Park, leaving John Houlding with a stadium but no team, so he created Liverpool FC.

Miss out on Europe, still get UEFA money? Yes, but it isn’t automatic.

The Champions League, Europa League and Conference League help fund solidarity payments for eligible clubs outside their league phases. UEFA’s 2025/26 pool was €308m. The interesting bit is how that money gets divided, and what clubs can actually use it for.

Should more European competition revenue reach clubs that never make the league phase?

#FNFRewind | Arsenal won in Munich. Bayern still went through.

Bayern and Arsenal meet again in the Champions League on 21 October, which sent us back to their 2013 tie. Giroud scored in three minutes. Koscielny made it 2–0 late on. Arsenal needed one more.

🧩 #FNFRewind | Brugge’s 116th-minute ticket to Wembley

Club Brugge putting four past Inter at San Siro sent me back to their 1978 European Cup semi-final with Juventus. Juve had won the first leg. Brugge levelled the tie three minutes into the return, then made everyone wait until the 116th minute for the winner.

Had you heard about this one?

#FNFDecoded | Borussia Dortmund are heading to Bodø/Glimt’s artificial pitch at Aspmyra.

Does UEFA allow that in the Champions League?

It does, but the surface has to meet specific standards. And there’s one match where the rule changes. Would you be happy seeing your club play a Champions League away game on artificial turf?
