I lost my dad on Monday. Today would have been his 75th birthday. When I was in 4th grade he was diagnosed with cancer and given 5 years to live. Despite that, he fought and survived for decades. He watched his 4 boys grow up, graduate, get married, and have children. I wish I had cherished the gift of time we were given more than I had. I wish I told him I loved him more than I did, even though I know he knew. I wish we had taken more pictures together. I wish I had asked him more questions. My dad was my rock. He was there for me at my highest highs, and my lowest lows. He celebrated my talents. He bragged about me. He never put me down, or made me feel ashamed. He loved my mother, and through that love showed me how to treat a woman. When I was younger, we spent a lot of time together and shared hobbies. When I got a job offer to move to Florida, he dropped everything he was doing and drove down the country with me and spent weeks helping me get settled. He had been sick for a long time now. And I knew this day was coming. But nothing prepares you for this. I already miss his voice. I already miss his dumb jokes and repetitive stories. I am a mess. I can only hope to be half the father he was to my boys.
