Continuing our Zoe Week of “What’s On Your Nightstand?,” with more awesome hand-picked choices from… you guessed it… Zoe (@funkyouryankeebluejeans)!

“A Scientific Study of Transsexuality - Oscar Woodiwiss, Fieldmouse Press
Oscar Woodiwiss (@oskmund) guts bioessentialism in this moving exploration of the nature of transness. The soft purple pencil against light pink paper is so tender it’s crushing. This comic juxtaposes the rigidity and sterility of biology with the messy inconsistencies of humanity so expertly. These scenes of trans bodies melding and bending into scenes of animals tearing one another apart, the shape of scars becoming fangs and claws, will resonate within me for a long time. I love everything Fieldmouse publishes, but this is among the closest to my heart.

A Real Gentle Knife - Josiah Leighton (@josiahleightonart)

This short comic feels simultaneously eerie and cozy. Like, well, a real gentle knife. This nearly wordless comic is hauntingly lonely. It feels like I’m about to be caught looking into someone else’s soul and I can’t tell if I was invited or lured in! Beyond the metallic silver print on the wraps, Josiah’s drawings are so detailed they almost look like xeroxed images; even the most visually sparse reveal more information about the setting and character as you continue to look.

Gauche Neapolitan Girl - Kyle Canyon (@kyle_canyon)

This PoMo diva has places to be and people to see! The stitching and folding on this pretty pink riso comic is to die for, revealing a hidden story that will have you flipping back, forth, and in between. Kyle Canyon joins AT Pratt in the pantheon of “my favorite foldables.” A little mysterious, somewhat silly, and very aesthetic, gauche neapolitan girl is the celebrity fashion icon of my dreams!

The Machine is Broken - Jared Sarnie (@fantagraphicz,) Fieldmouse Press (@fieldmousepress)

With the support of her mother and sister, a suicidal American decides to take her own life by using the world’s first self-service assisted euthanasia devices...except it breaks as soon as she gets in it and she has no return ticket home. This total trip of a graphic novella took me on a wi by @fantagraphicz

THE MACHINE IS BROKEN reviewed by @rjcaseywrites for @the_comics_journal_

I've deceptively pulled a series of quotes out of context in order to give the false appearance of a positive review. I am honored to be torn apart in the pages of this historic magazine!

WE DESTROYED THE ENTIRE PRINT RUN OF MY BOOK

There was a production error on the first batch of copies of THE MACHINE IS BROKEN, so we had to pulp the whole run. Rather than let the recycling plant have all the fun, we had a book destruction party.

THE MACHINE IS BROKEN is going right back to print and all preorders will be honored! It will be in your hands soon.
