These images are from a failed #pitfire where I attempted to make #ceramic vessels which would be covered in #papermache to make clay #piñata

The project was built for part in a workshop @everybodysbirthdayparty exploring the history of piñatas and papier-mâché, cultural appropriation, colonialism, and the circulation of craft traditions

There were so many mistakes made along the way that I don’t even know where to begin. Failure can be such a powerful tool in craft. Especially being aware of the errors in real time and watching them end in catastrophe. #hubris

Planning to process this red clay into a usable clay body

The first images are clay we extracted on an @peregrinebuilders project to underpin some existing footers on a church hill garage for an #adu build

Second images are of some clay I have been saving from digging underneath my back porch at home for a #mudroom foundation .

Continued to be humbled by #craft and its practitioners. Learning about wood feels daunting enough, to think about another material seems selfish . But since youth I have always been drawn to clay

Humbled by the #earth

It will be slow and arduous process but I am excited to work this clay with my hands and in turn gain a healthy building material
.

Construction often feels like such a destructive force. I am constantly looking for more ways to create a more holistic approach to building. There is an incredible rich tradition globally of #indigenous use of clay as both an architectural material as well as one suitable for homewares and goods. Such a versatile material deserves our reverence not to be so easily discarded for ease of labor

I’ve done pit fires in the past and had some success and failure. Excited to try for some larger vessels as well as some experiments in clay plaster

Any tips ?? Greatly appreciated by @fantasy_jive

Working on framing out new walls and making repairs inside this building on Forest Hill with @peregrinebuilders

One day someone posted this #risograph print on the plywood and sent copies through the mail slot.

Another day someone was taking a photo of the wall. I walked out and asked them if they knew the artist .

This is a story about how I learned about a #newfavoriteartist @tiddypopeye

Second day playing mason on this church hill garage adu build for @peregrinebuilders

Smoother than day one, remembering some of the tricks.

In apprenticeship, beyond applying help to the skilled labor, the trainee spends their hours absorbing the master working. Watching their movements and understanding their purpose

I cherish these moments to practice these skills. As a carpenter on site I am constantly watching other trades work and have a solid working understanding of the process. But time in the trench is what really helps solidify this knowledge and gives confidence to speak with more experience to know that my mortar is still #toowet

Something I enjoy working as a carpenter for general contractors is finding spaces in the project where it becomes efficient for you to self perform other trades . #construction

In order to frame this floor system I needed some block infilled that broke out during demo. I’m not the fastest mason . But if going ahead and getting this small block work completed allows me to move forward with my carpentry work, that’s often the fastest way forward.

It has helped build my confidence as a tradesperson because you quickly learn working in someone else’s shoes is not as easy as it might look

Let me know what I did wrong so I’ll be better next time

Dropped pins from two different field locations;
this is a fun trick I picked up from @takamikawai where you let a small rock fall from a point in order to find a footer location

I’ve found this to be a really quick and accurate method to mark plumb in the dirt

Trust the first rock , second time mostly just for fun
