Sonic in-betweenness speaks about phenomena that are between presence and absence, human and non-human, and juxtaposing temporalities. It is about process. How do we work in sound and with sound if we want to account for the contradictions of being present, and the different relationships to sound and audio?

- Thanks to @spatialaudiogathering_ and @britishforumforethnomusicology for having me. Talking to different audiences in just 15 mins about what I did for 4 years really puts me in new places. More analysis. More ideas. So much to do.

Il verso del geco (29’30”- stereo)

—sawt el-bors shaklha eh? — “What’s the voice of the gecko?” Asked my cat, looking at me and then pointing at the gecko on the kitchen window — Bring it to me, and I will give you what you want.

I still don’t know the sound of the gecko, dear Bayoumi, but I heard camels, horses, frogs, a semsemiyya and mysterious urban birds.

A slow-paced collection of field recordings. No interventions of any sort, just filtering, and the transduction of the microphones.

And now, dear Bayoumi, you parted. May this be a lullaby to remember you and make you company while you wander, bossing around beyond the stars.

✨ Exformal is proud to present: Valentina Ciniglio - "Sonic In-Betweenness. Acts of Devotion in Public Spaces, Egypt" ✨

A dizzying, sonic tour of Egyptian devotional practices recorded over 5 years.

As Ciniglio writes in the essay accompanying the release: "Living, recording, and listening to the Dhikr led to a sense of kind of “sonic in-betweenness”. The idea points at the specific relation between listening/sounding entities that unfolds in two directions: it makes individuals experience something other than themselves, may we call it non-human or divine. At the same time, in the feedback between the diverse sounding / listening entities, sound becomes something more than a mere physical phenomenon, as it has the power to create a juxtaposition of temporalities affecting individuals."

🎪 This release is part of the series Exformal Zones. Exformal Zones is a series of releases exploring and expanding the art-form of field recording — the radical act of listening to a sound environment through microphones.

Valentina (@valentinaciniglio / @far__dous) is an electroacoustic music composer and researcher in the field of Sound Studies. She completed her BA’s and MA’s in International Relations and Institutions of Asia and Africa, has studied Electronic Music at the Conservatory of Naples “S. Pietro a Majella”, and currently she is finishing her PhD project in Music at the University of Cambridge. She uses immersive audio techniques as a way to explore collective heritage and social dynamics both in urban and rural contexts. She is interested in the relations between sound, space and communities. In her PhD project, she is exploring the relationship between sound, bodies and space in the Sufi practice of dhikr in Egypt, by deploying the binaural format as a research tool.

  TAPE RELEASE PARTY

  From a true story

There is a collective in Naples of electronic composers and performers.

They speak a language coming from the centre of a vulcano: telluric silences, gassy punctuation, aqueous transmissions and boiling gestures.

They can make 300 people - and more - listen to three hours of electroacoustic improvisation.

They are ready to strike again! So be aware, go check the page @napolitotale

That energy is still with me, thank you 🖤

Thanks to @l_asilo for hosting us and helping us with the event
Thanks to @p_aolomontella and @andrea.laudante for making this possible
Thanks to all the friends who came

1. I don’t think I have ever spent so much time alone with myself as much I did in Cambridge;

2-3. Electroacoustic Day at the Faculty of Music, Cambridge. Sounding a short art video “Entangling” by Sofije Slaidina. Thanks Marta Gentilucci for inviting me!

4-5-6. Musical Futures, British Forum for Ethnomusicology Conference. Happy for having shared the first results of my three-years journey about field recording, binaural, dhikr, and not last, friendship and rediscovering my relationship with the sacred;

7. My companions of long runs (away from what?): my bike Volcano 🌋 and a couple of Sennheiser Mkh 8040 (+ Albert Cinela windshield);

8. Yes, I’ve started pole dance. Hot shawarma spinning very fast, very (very?) soon;

9. Closing a reading with the Star, couldn’t ask for a better blessing.

Mediterranean Futures: Napoli (13 & 14 February)

N A P O L I: suone scuscinate
This is a collection of field recordings and music related to the Neapolitan area in different ways.
“Scuscenate” in Neapolitan means unmade, and quite messy.
The sounds are threads of the urban weave of the city. I followed some of them, indulged in knots and cut ends: they might suggest something, to then make a mockery out of it; they might play on the line between grotesque and real; they are seducing but rotting; they are rough and fragile at the same time.

From the touristification to the revival/resistance of the popular music, from the hectic shopping to racialized soundscapes of the more popular areas, with the musical intervention of different genres from Antonio Raia, Claudio Panariello, La Bestia Carenne, J Lord, Speranza, and Rocco Gitano, this is just another tale about Naples, slowly harsh.

→→→ TODAY, 5 PM (Palestine time) / 4 PM (Italy time) / 3 PM (UK time) on @radioalhara. 'A Juta a Montevergine w/ @valentinaciniglio ✧✧

For this new episode, Valentina Ciniglio (@valentinaciniglio/@far__dous) will present a sonic journey of the Juta of Montevergine through her own field recordings.

The Juta is an important popular tradition in Campania, consisting of an annual pilgrimage to the Sanctuary of Montevergine, located on Mount Partenio. The word juta comes from Neapolitan and means "ascent" or "going up," emphasising the spiritual and physical journey to this sacred site. This pilgrimage has very ancient roots, blending elements of Christian religiosity with popular traditions linked to pagan rites. The central figure of the ritual is the Madonna of Montevergine, also known as "Mamma Schiavona," a black Madonna who, according to popular lore, was marginalised due to the colour of her skin, leading her to seek refuge at the top of the mountain. Revered as the Madonna of the oppressed, she has become a symbol of spiritual refuge and welcome. Montevergine is also historically regarded as the Madonna of the femminielli—the Neapolitan and Campanian LGBTQ+ community.

Valentina Ciniglio (@valentinaciniglio/@far__dous) is a composer, musician and researcher, focusing on field recording, binaural format and spatialization techniques. She completed her BA’s and MA’s in International Relations and Institutions of Asia and Africa, has studied Electronic Music at the Conservatory of Naples “S. Pietro a Majella”, and currently she is a PhD student in Music at the University of Cambridge.

My piece “Bayn el-gabal we el-bahr, ana//tra la montagna e il mare, io” is between the works diffused at the ACMC 2024 Futurity in Sidney on October 22.

I’m so excited and grateful

It’s a piece that took me long to finish, not for its technical features, but for the complexity of the field recordings I worked on. Uncomfortable, delicate, on the line. A long to and fro. And here we are.

Then, it will be the time for the Daegu International Computer Music Festival, Korea! by @far__dous
