Assembling a polyphonic set of voices each offering a short presentation on a concrete aspect of Shahin’s artistic and existential vision, the event aims at delineating Shahin’s unique approach to art. Shahin Parhami lived nurtured by an original vision in which a variety of elements combined into a unique cosmopolitan aesthetic sensibility. Drawing inspiration from the New Wave Iranian cinema, horror movies, Indian food, Arabic music, Filmfarsi, Persian poetry, cats, Stockhausen, les ruelles de Montréal and much more, Shahin Parhami assembled these elements with his own signature style. Faculty members of the Institute of Islamic Studies and other friends will discuss several aspects of Shahin’s work and scholar of Iranian cinema Farbod Honarpisheh (Yale University) will give a talk on his cinematic works.

Titled Decaying Troves: Decomposing Commissioned Perspectives, this evening program brings together three short films – two from the archives (analog 35 mm prints) and one made using archival material – that reflect on political and cultural transformation in Iran.

In her documentary essay, Sahnehaye Estekhraj (Scenes of Extraction), Sanaz Sohrabi employs a critical approach to analyse archived material, exploring the environment between the European imperialist visitors and Iranians. The evening also includes two Iranian film works from the 20th Century: Arbaïn by the remarkable Nasser Taghvai, which focuses on the Iranian ritual of the same name, and Iran, the Land of Religion (analog 35 mm print) by Manoucher Tayyab, which captures various religious ceremonies in mosques, prayer rooms, churches, and fire temples.

THE PAST IS NOT ANOTHER COUNTRY is a two-year project by @sinematranstopia and @dff.film – Deutsches Filminstitut & Filmmuseum, funded by the Hauptstadtkulturfonds Berlin and the City of Frankfurt.

The Iranian New Wave, as the large body of art films made before the 1979 revolution came to be known, always showed an ethnographic register. The screenings will consist of a number of highly lyrical ethnographic documentaries from the 60s and 70s. The directors of these films often came from literature to cinema. They were modernist authors, short story writers, poets, and stage directors. Congruent with a surge in institution-building, film crews were formed and they travelled with their cameras and microphones to distant corners of the country in search of peoples, ancient objects, and ways of life thought to belong to another era. Soon to emerge as among the most influential personas in the Iranian cultural scene, the names of these young documentary filmmakers included Ebrahim Golestan, Forough Farrokhzad, Fereydoun Rahnema, Nasser Taghvai, and Parviz Kimiavi.
Some of the films we are going to screen depict historical ruins and excavation sites, others represent religious and “folk” practices (trance practices, mourning rituals, “traditional” storytelling, passion plays, and pilgrimages to shrines). Farbod Honarpisheh will offer his reflections on the history of documentary cinema and the relationships between the artistic renderings of the “ruin” and that of the “body.” In time, what comes to the fore, is the pro-filmic world of the ruin and the body in anguish (affected by disease, decay, disintegration, possession, and excessive passion), the two main material inventories that left their mark on the formal and political maneuverings of Iranian visual culture for decades to come.
