The painting days brought more than just paint and walls 🥹

Throughout the process, LOKA and Anpu were joined by old friends, new friends, fellow artists, and people from the local community who stopped by to say hello, catch up, watch the painting, or simply share a moment.

Some conversations lasted a few minutes, others turned into longer exchanges. Different circles meeting around the same wall, connecting through art, stories, and a shared curiosity 💫

LOKA begins building her mural in Desa Guwang, bringing her own visual language into a completely new setting 🤩✨

Up on the wall.

@anpusan begins translating the ideas she gathered during her time in Bali into a large scale mural in Desa Guwang.

A few days earlier, she was still walking through the village looking for a face to photograph as a reference. Now that face is beginning to take shape on the wall 💫 by @fareastmural

After nearly a week of exploring Bali, meeting local artists, and getting to know the culture, people, and landscapes, it was finally time for Anpu Varkey and LOKA to begin developing their murals.

On the morning before painting began, Anpu returned to Desa Guwang to look for a local child who could become the reference for one of the figures in her mural. While walking through the village, she met a young boy who happily agreed to pose for a few photographs. That simple encounter became the starting point for the mural she would paint over the following days.

The next morning, mural production officially began💫

The studio visits continued 💫

After spending the morning at Setia Cap Cili, anpusan and @me.loka_ continued exploring more artist studios through Ubud Open Studios 2026, visiting @gamastudio_alternativelab by @gungama_gama , @suryasubratha_work Studio, @nyilihstudio and @guratinstitute .

Each studio offered a completely different way of making. From painting and sculpture to experimental and interdisciplinary practices, the visits became an opportunity to meet the artists behind the work, hear their stories, and experience the many directions contemporary art is taking in Bali.

The day ended with Anpu and LOKA were attending the Balinese wedding celebration of Yessiow’s friend, @aldoputrarah and @putriokasuari 🩷 Surrounded by family, friends, music, food, and tradition, they experienced another side of Bali that rarely appears in guidebooks, one rooted in community and togetherness.

As part of Far East Mural Project #3, Anpu Varkey and LOKA spent the past days exploring Bali during Ubud Open Studios 2026 🌾

With the support of @ubudopenstudios , both artists had the opportunity to visit and experience different Balinese artists’ studios across Gianyar and Ubud, learning directly from local creative practices, materials, and stories behind the works.

Their first stop was @setiacapcili @idonpande, where they were introduced to the process of traditional tenun ikat weaving, learning about the techniques, symbolism, colors, and the cultural relationship between textile practice and Balinese daily life 💫💫
