🌹'The flowers were enough.'

When artist Joan Miró visited Lee Miller and Roland Penrose at Farleys, he found inspiration in the simplest of pleasures: sitting quietly in the garden with his wife, Pilar, admiring the flowers and the distant South Downs.

Miró's fascination with flowers found its way into his art. Here, you can see him taking inspiration from a vaseful of dahlias in our sitting room, mid-sketch in the Farleys visitor book.

Inspired by Miró's love of flowers at Farleys? 🪴Why not spend an autumn day with us exploring your own creative response to nature?

Join us for our Autumn Sketching & Painting Workshop on 15 October, where you'll be guided in developing flower-led compositions, taken from our garden.

Whether you're a seasoned sketcher or simply looking to slow down, look closely and tune into the seasonal shifts, we'd love to have you with us.

🎟️Final spaces available - book via our website (link in bio)

What we’ve noticed outdoors this September…

🌧️ Finally, we’ve had some much-needed rain, and the grass is looking a little greener.

Conkers have been falling earlier than usual, so if you’re visiting, watch your head (!)

🎃 And…if you’ve been following the progress of our massive pumpkin over the last few weeks, you can see it’s grown even more.

Check in next month to see how the garden progresses through Autumn.

Come and see us while you can - we'd love to see you before we reopen next spring.

💛This year is the first where we opened our café to everyone - not just ticket holders. We've hoped this space could be a place for locals to enjoy a hot drink, or a historical East Sussex destination to visit for lunch. We've so enjoyed welcoming you this year! There's only a month to go to visit our café before we close for our winter season of quiet...

We've been serving some of Lee Miller's recipes, including 'Green Bitch' (!), Lee's tongue-in-cheek adaptation of a more pedestrian 'Green Goddess'. If you want to try a 'Green Bitch' dish, visit Farleys soon, or purchase our Lee Miller cookbook to make it yourself...

📖The book 'Lee Miller: A Life with Food, Friends & Recipes' is available to buy in the Farleys shop, both online and in-person.

🍽️Our café is open Thursdays, Fridays, Sundays and select Saturdays 10am-4.30pm

🍂We're a few days on from the autumn equinox; when day and night were almost equal. Now, the year has turned toward cooler weather; shorter days and longer nights.

What's your favourite thing about autumn?

Though this season signals a slowing when compared with the growth and abundance of spring and summer; there remains plenty of colour, texture and life in Lee Miller's garden.

🎨Our upcoming Autumn Sketching & Painting Workshop takes place on 15 October. There, you'll study botanical artists from history before turning your gaze on our garden. Studying seed heads, ferns, evergreen grass and perhaps the silvery pods of honesty (as seen here), you'll document the garden through drawing exercises and painting.

🎟️This is our last creative workshop of our 2026 open season. Book final spaces at the 'tickets' link in our bio.

There isn’t long left to see the home of Lee Miller and Roland Penrose this year. Thankfully, you can gaze at the interiors of Farleys all year long – in book form! – watch their son, Antony Penrose have a look at one of the books we self-publish here at the Archives.

It’s been a very special year for us, with Farleys House & Gallery gaining charity status a few months ago. We hope that this will safeguard this wonderful, colourful home for future generations to visit.

🔥Meet the only blacksmith of the Women's Royal Naval Service (WRNS) - Margaret Young!

During the Second World War, Margaret worked in the submarine workshop at Fort Blockhouse in Gosport.

This photograph was featured in 'Wrens in Camera' in 1945, Lee Miller's only photographic book published in her lifetime, and the image hasn't been seen since. Until now!

You can see this photograph, and countless others documenting the determination of women working during war-time, in our exhibition 'Grim Glory: Lee Miller's Britain at War' open until October 30th.

📖Our accompanying publication of the same name is available through the @FarleysHG bookshop. Why not swot up ahead of a visit and pre-order before a house tour and gallery wander...

A peek into Lee Miller’s desk!

This curious object was perhaps used like the ‘fidget toys’ so popular today, and again appealed to Lee’s sense of humour…

The ‘instructions’ are particularly hilarious:

This ‘hot air…grinder’ was allegedly the ‘newest American status symbol’ - made by ‘unemployed moonshiners’ (!) This could be used ‘for relieving nervous tension for advanced stages of thumb twiddling’, for sharpening dull conversations…the world’s most useless necessity’

Swipe to see it in action!

‘Lee Miller Penrose does most of the cooking, mainly because she so dislikes country life that she finds the kitchen a heaven’ - American Vogue, 1965

Whether you love the countryside or not, the kitchen here at Farleys remains the heart of Lee Miller's home...

💛It's so important to us that this space remains an active one, and so, we offer cookery workshops a few times a year where YOU can learn to cook Lee's recipes in the very room where she invented them!

Join us on 9 or 10 December, when the house is usually closed to visitors, and bask in the festive atmosphere of Farleys. Led by the wonderful Chloe Edwards of @sevensistersspices, you'll learn about Lee's kitchen gadgets and her love of creating Surrealist dishes before preparing a feast, all to enjoyed at Lee's original table.

🎟️These are among our most popular workshops, find out more and book your space at the link in our bio to avoid disappointment.

🎨Picasso found inspiration here. Lee Miller made art from her herb patch. Roland Penrose created artworks from postcards. Now it's your turn to make something of your own at Farleys!

Long before Farleys became an open artist's house and gallery, it was a home where creativity was part of everyday life...

Lee and Roland welcomed the imagination into every corner of the house; and artists such as Picasso, Leonora Carrington, Dorothea Tanning and Joan Miró were inspired by the rural exterior and colourful interior.

Over the coming months, our creative workshops invite you to slow down, get curious and make something of your own in these extraordinary surroundings. Whether you have an established practice or have never picked up a sketchbook, there's space for all abilities!

✨1 October - Postcard Collage Workshop

✨15 October - Autumn Painting & Sketching Workshop

✨9 & 10 December - Winter Cookery Workshop
