Blossom end rot occurs when the developing fruit doesn’t get enough calcium, a vital nutrient that helps build strong cell walls. Interestingly, it’s not always about the amount of calcium in the soil, sometimes, it’s about how well the plant can absorb it. Factors like irregular watering, poor soil health, root damage, or too much nitrogen fertiliser can all interfere with calcium uptake.

To prevent this, you should:

➡️Maintain consistent soil moisture.

➡️Water deeply and regularly, and use mulch to keep the soil cool and moist.

➡️Test your soil’s pH (ideally between 6.2 and 6.8) and add calcium-rich amendments, such as lime or gypsum, if necessary.

➡️Go easy on nitrogen-heavy fertilisers, they promote leafy growth at the expense of fruit health.
