Bidens alba, often thought of as a weedy nuisance, is a true blessing to food foresters and gardeners alike who reside in zones 8a-11b.

There are several ways to utilize this plant for its edible and medicinal qualities. In this video I demonstrate how I collect leaf juice while out in the food forest.

The leaf juice is a great pain killer that I have used many times after being stung by ants, wasps, and caterpillars. Some stings may require multiple applications.

Other reasons I love this plant:
Tea
Edible leaf

These agroforestry beds in South Florida took significant hurricane damage, which opened up opportunity for grass to invade. This system is several acres and managed by one person so efficiency of labor is a top priority.

Fruit trees featured in this system are a variety of mango, avocado, guava, sapodilla, coconut, longan, and annona.

Process:

1) string trim grass back to edge of midline

2) hand pull grass from midline

3) reseed midline w/approx. 100 seeds every 2' (perennial and annual)

4) heavy pruning of excess biomass (banana, Corymbia, cassava, pigeon pea, sugar cane) by @farmboy_q

How do you use Tithonia Diversifolia, aka Mexican sunflower, in the food forest?
.
.
.
Here in this clients food forest Tithonia is being used as the primary chop and drop species, but I have stacked it's functionality by also using it as an edge to suppress "weed" pressure. Constantly adding biomass to improve soil organic carbon as well as mitigating weed pressure are two critical ingredients to achieving an abundant, resilient, and hassle-free food forest.

Which plant is on your wish list?

This is kind of what it feels like to acquire a plant that's been on your wish list for 5+ years. Fingers crossed it is the true AeAe, if not it is the "Florida Musa" instead.

ID confirmation will be complete once it fruits - AeAe has rounded fruits like the Hua moa whereas the Florida Musa has more pointed fruit tips like the Mysore or Namwah. Although the Florida Musa is easier to grow (in Florida) and bares sweeter fruit it is not nearly as valuable or rare as the AeAe.
