By the food system, for the food system. The source matters most - let’s get there together 🌱
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Next up on our “Did You Know” series: @saffisaana extra virgin olive oil! 🫒 To kick-off @climateweeknyc we are so excited to share more about one of our closed-loop partners ♻️

Did you know that some traditional olive tree are hundreds of years old and can continue producing olives for generations? 🌳@saffisaana works directly with family farms in Chile, Spain, Canada, Kenya, and locations throughout the U.S! As a result, they are also able to provide complete transparency and trace the source of all of their ingredients 👏 Learn more about it by scanning the QR codes from @farmsdirectory at the store!

Thanks to our refillable drums, @maisonjar.nyc has been able to reduce packaging waste as a retailer while maintaining the freshness and quality of our EVOO. Even better, our customers diverted the equivalent of 2,393 EVOO bottles (25 fl oz) from packaging waste last year alone! 🧡 Have you ever tried refilling your olive oil at @maisonjar.nyc ? taken in Maison Jar by @farmsdirectory

Did you know there are over thousand varieties of bananas, but most you see in grocery stores come from just one?

The familiar yellow banana belongs to the Cavendish group, just one small slice of an incredibly diverse crop grown around the world.

The bananas Maison Jar stocks come through @equalexchange, which works with farmer cooperatives to build a more direct and equitable path from growers to the people they feed.

This is part of our Maison Jar × Milpa “Did You Know?” series, bringing us closer to the source of the foods we eat: where they grow, who produces them, and how they reach your plate.

Find the “Did You Know?” card in the store and scan the Milpa Journey to learn more about the story behind your bananas.

Imagine growing acres of blackberries, grapes, and raising animals with just two people. Just a few pairs of hands but these girls still grow some beautiful fruit. I’m so inspired by how much joy they find in their work.

Come get some @quimby_farm blackberries this weekend at Daya Yoga Studio. Details below or in my bio.

Did you know the cashew grows on the outside of a fruit?

Each cashew nut forms at the end of a colorful cashew apple: one fruit, one nut.

The cashews at Maison Jar come through @equalexchange from @gebana.official, where farming families grow and process the cashews locally rather than shipped abroad for processing.

This is the first in a new @maisonjar.nyc × @farmsdirectory series bringing us closer to the source of the foods we eat every day: how they grow, who produces them, and how they reach the shelf.

Find the “Did You Know?” card in the store and scan the Milpa Journey to meet the producers, discover the full story, and find recipes.

Restoring habitat is great as big heroic clearing but sometimes it’s just a steady, cumulative effort. Sometimes it takes us a long time to realize the consequences of abandoning this work.

Managing invasive species is about keeping space for the native plants and wildlife to return, through changes in microclimate and soil condition. On the way, you can often enjoy the flowers, fruits, and strange beauty of plants people once brought here for now forgotten reasons.

You’ll never have to recycle the plastic your food comes in, if your food doesn’t come wrapped in plastic ✨

At @maisonjar.nyc you don’t have to worry about plastic waste. Bring your own jars, buy some there, or fill a brown paper bag that you can compost later.

It’s such a joy to have the experience of tracking the journey of the food you buy with @farmsdirectory ! They really deepen the food shopping experience. We especially love collecting stamps from everything we scan in @maisonjar.nyc

Food systems are changing shape and once again becoming something you can feel connected to, rather than separated from through layers of plastic.

Join the refillery movement and follow your foods journey ✨ 🍲 🍚

Birdsong and feral salad; it’s spring at the farm and we’re getting ready to mow and turn over our vegetable rows. Before we start, we’re foraging for some of the wild and introduced spring greens that pop up in our field. After a few years of letting mustards and other brassicas drop their seed instead of “weeding” them, we are seeing them pop up all over for a bright, spicy snack. Farmers often plant mustards to enrich and fumigate the soil before their cash crop - we did it with some culinary varieties so that we can enjoy them too.

Wondering where your food comes from? Finding out shouldn’t feel like a chore.

We’re teaming up with @maisonjar.nyc to connect you to the producers who fill their shelves.

Come by the shop and start meeting the folks who gather ramps, press olives, and shell cashews with care.

We’re excited to share their Journeys!

Some foods require a little extra care to enjoy. Warabi, or bracken fern, should be cooked in an alkaline solution like baking soda and water to neutralize compounds that make it unsafe to eat. It's a delicacy in many cultures, with a unique taste between asparagus and okra.
