I haven’t been doing press about my film because I’m too paranoid of framing and agendas, especially during another round of “do we call this war or not?” But when @themetermaid, my friend, asked if she could write about my part in the Beit Beirut show, I knew she’d do so with care for me and for the outcome. She spoke to a few of the Hkeeli Ya Jnoub women on why telling our own stories matters, please read the full piece on @middleeasteye to see what Sama, Rawan, and I had to say.

The show is on for one more week - and Beit Beirut is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays - so pop in while you can to see/hear/feel our stories about our South 💚 taken in Beit Beirut by @farrahberrou

INTRODUCING: BUFFER ZONE. (18min)

In less than 10 days, my short film will premiere to a small audience at the @arabimagefoundation with @asil_anthropologylebanon. After the screening, we’ll have a discussion/Q&A on the film and all the many considerations that came with creating it and then sharing it with the public.

While it took six months to put together, this film took a year to slowly extract. A year to harvest, press, ferment, and distill. I have a feeling that more will come from the same ravaged vineyard. This is only the first vintage.

📌Join on the 16th at 6:30pm to see the full film and follow along on the website [bufferzonefilm.com] for future screenings. by @farrahberrou

Drone story - @laura.menassa
Beirut, novembre 2024.

From my mother’s novel – @fatiimajoumaa

Ship of fools – @aliahaju

There are two more weeks left of Hkeeli Ya Jnoub, the latest exhibition installed within the walls of Beit Beirut. For a brief moment, you can visit our South.

My short film, Buffer Zone, is screening there everyday at your convenience. Ask the floor supervisor on duty to press play so you can watch the full 18 minutes tucked in the corner room.

I’ll be around for a bit on the Night of the Museums (July 16th) but that event will draw a crowd. If you want a private/quiet time to see the film, come by before or after. The program is on until the 26th! taken in Beit Beirut by @farrahberrou

I will be adding a page on all of this info to my film’s website but, for now, here’s a second installment on #AanabNews recapping the fundraisers that took place in May & June. Link in bio.

Things have slowed as the situation on the ground changes but Lebanon is still *going through it* - donate where you can.

Thank you again to all who made this happen 💚 by @farrahberrou

📍 Film Screening & Discussion | Buffer Zone

What remains of a place when it can no longer be reached?

As part of the cultural program accompanying Hkeeli Ya Jnoub, join us for an evening with Lebanese-American writer, filmmaker, and exhibiting artist Farrah Berrou. The event includes a screening of her short film Buffer Zone, followed by an open conversation about the film, her practice, and the questions it raises around memory, place, and belonging.

Part documentary and part memoir, the film emerges from Berrou's relationship to Kfarkila, her ancestral border village in South Lebanon, which remains inaccessible because of the ongoing war and occupation. Through footage captured on her phone and fragments of personal archives, Buffer Zone reflects on what remains of home, land, and memory when a place itself is threatened with erasure.

Hkeeli Ya Jnoub, the latest extension of Beit Beirut’s Hkeeli program, brings together the work of artists and archivists from the South. Through various media, we honor our histories in occupied lands that are still being assaulted daily by the Z entity.

It’s a bittersweet thing to be included in this exhibition, to be able to share my film in such strong company. Big thanks to Delphine for bringing me in.

I’m still getting used to calling myself a filmmaker and it has been so weird to now be recognized as such because I made a short film about how the “most moral army in the world” flattened my entire village in 2024. Everything about personal art is messy.

When I walk through this exhibition, I find familiar pieces within these strangers’ lives. A couch with the same fabric pattern as ours. A kitchen with the same pots. A woman from the same village with the same first name who misses the same smell. I ask myself: is it too soon to create a space for the fragility of memory and the permanence of grief, when we are still losing so much? Or must we do so while we can before another calamity eclipses all that came before it?

What do we do with all of this rage?

*Buffer Zone* is screening on the first floor. Pass by during opening hours to watch at your convenience (Wed - Sun, 12-8pm). taken in Beit Beirut - Museum and Urban Cultural Center by @farrahberrou

Thank you to everyone who joined us for Films from the Frontlines of South Lebanon.

As Israel continues its genocidal assault on Palestine and expands its violence across the region, South Lebanon exists under a shadow of invasion, bombardment and occupation. These attacks do not emerge in isolation. They are part of a broader imperial project sustained by military power, western complicity, and a global war machine that treats Arab lives as expendable and entire landscapes as sites for endless destruction.

At a time when South Lebanon is so often spoken about rather than spoken with, these films offered something urgently necessary: the South on its own terms. Not as a geopolitical talking point, not as a border zone or military theatre, but as home.

A huge thank you to @jaycesalloum, @farrahberrou, @until.sunrise, @baytsaleh whose work all refuse erasure. Your films and music preserve villages, homes and histories in the face of repeated attempts to destroy them. They remind us that art and film is not neutral but it can be witness, act as resistance and itself is a political act.

Thank you to Anthony and @stef.saad for feeding us, thanks to @jimbuluscrimbulus for his help before and after in facilitating the screening, and @mothership.marrickville and @pinkflamingocinema always. And huge thank you to @jules.sarantis for capturing the night again with her beautiful photos.

Also massive thank you to Taylor of @verus.au who designed and made the merch on offer, and made additional donations possible through his generosity.

And thank you to every person who came, sat with these stories and stayed for the conversations afterwards. Gathering together to watch, think, mourn and support collectively feels especially important in a moment where isolation, despair and dehumanisation are so heavily imposed upon us.

We raised $1772 for @nationstation__ from just this screening, with another screening to come this Friday.

Long live the South. See you on Friday for our Beirut series. taken in Mothership Studios by @farrahberrou
