Not a moment is wasted... when a second is taken... to pick up the phone, send a card, share a laugh, shed a tear, keep a promise, and be a son... To a wonderful Mother.

Billie Holiday performed a song that left a lasting impression on countless listeners. Piercing souls with the pain of Black plight at a time where the truth was suspended alongside swinging Black bodies.

Unsettling, Unjust, Unnecessary, but a real part of our Black History.

Last week, my family and I had the privilege of taking my Grandmother to New Orleans to celebrate her 80th Birthday.

1946 is alive and well through God’s Grace. Those honest eyes have seen the changing of tides, politically, socioeconomically, racially, and spiritually; embodying living history that requires no more than 1 on 1 time during our trips to the store.

Meals made from scratch spark meaningful conversations that teach me about personal lineage, and I can connect my epigenetic optimism to my great grandfather’s branch on this beautiful family tree.

She did not deliver “I Have a Dream” to thousands of onlookers, she delivered 2 children, and I’m grateful one of them was my mother. She was not the first to sit upfront on the bus, but she used her new found freedoms to take that bus to work for social services in Boston Massachusetts; helping any and all those who needed assistance, including our forgotten Veterans and those unhoused.

She remembers historical marches, misfortunes, and mayhem, but still dances as if the world will keep spinning.

She is how I view Black History. It’s living and breathing, ongoing, ageless, timeless, and important to me even if the world only pays it a minutes worth of attention.

It is the reason I’m here.

As I reflect on Juneteenth and the current conditions plaguing these United States, this quote comes to mind...

"Peace is no mere matter of men fighting or not fighting. Peace, to have meaning for many who have known only suffering in both peace and war, must be translated into bread or rice, shelter, health, and education, as well as freedom and human dignity – a steadily better life." -Ralph J. Bunche

Community is always going to be the key to harmony's home. Education will always be the vehicle that drives us towards new and better ways of building that home, and God will always be the landlord. How do we build trust after so many untrustworthy actions have taken place? You start with empathy and forgiveness towards, and of, yourself and others. Your memories will only serve as reminders, but you must refuse to stay stuck there.

We must all seek peace and everything that comes with it as a collective.
