I paid homage to PeeWee’s iconic holiday refrigerator scene this year in my 1956 GE. It started innocently with a string of Christmas lights and culminated in googly eyes on steaks. I am not sorry, and I will do it again. 😆

New recruit! Did I just start a new collection? Oh probably. This is a Junior Achievement “Tele-pen,” which were made by high school students involved with the Junior Achievement program in the 1960s. This one has a few little issues, the numbers are worn off - but I’m a sucker for this particular color, as it’s the same phone/color that started my personal collection. And yes, it does come in more colors. by @farre11kat

This was among my very first lamps. I found it at a glorious annual fall church sale that unfortunately is no longer held. It was like a department store, but each department was in its own giant tent. I don’t think I was in line when they opened - but it was within the first hour. I could not believe it waited for me. I no longer remember what I paid, but I feel like it was maybe $8. Best guess, 2005? I know that the odd shade isn’t original but I have always loved it just the way it was. (I suspect the missing color might be blue, but we will never know.) It’s pictured here in this neglected corner on a Heyeood Wakefield corner bookcase that holds all my DVDs. Because I’m old, and you can pry the physical media out of my cold dead hands.

I went through a lot of versions of this kitchen when we were designing the house. The breakthrough finally came when I found our bathroom vanity on FB marketplace, I realized I the kitchen cabinets needed to be slanted, too. I found out pretty quickly, though, that this was a fad that didn’t stick around. Nobody makes a slanted cabinet anymore, certainly nothing with slide-by doors. I scoured the internet, and discovered @aletha_ and her #grandhavenmcm project in early 2019. I emailed her annoying questions which she graciously answered, but confirmed that the cabinets they installed in that house were indeed custom built. We explored having uppers custom built, but it was foolish - “particularly because they’re so simple” (says my husband.) This quickly became, “well how hard can it be, really.” We went to @rosieeclectique’s midcentury house that had slanted uppers, and took some measurements. We ordered commercial lowers in a custom color, as the industry also fails to make the perfect midcentury honey color they *needed* to be. Justin started working on stains, and tested one million combinations of stains and varnish before cracking the code. (It’s perfect - and anything we ever stain now is General Finishes water-based wood stain in Pecan.) We stained them in the basement of our old house, and installed them ourselves after the lowers were put in. They butt up to the commercial cabinets and it really is a near perfect match! The intent was always to install slide-by glass, and there are tracks for this purpose. I can’t say that I will never order up the glass and put them in, but I have enjoyed the open shelves the last few years. I know it’s not for everyone! Here’s a look at the cabinets from their good side. (Jk they’re all good sides, and I love them.)

Some of the most pristine vintage I find are niche serving pieces that there’s almost no occasion to actually use in real life. (I’m looking at you, fancy glass soup and sandwich sets.)

New acquisition! A proper square for this Sodahl textile print. (Possibly a design by Hans Jurgen Schobel? These pieces seldom come up for sale, and this one is particularly charming. It was worked into the kitchen with a little arranging, swipe to see.

I’m super interested in seeing other Sodahl textiles from the time period! Are there collectors on here who have a lot? I have seen table linens and runners more than I have pieces meant for hanging.

Five years ago, I posted this lamp picture, saying, “look at this glorious goddam lamp! If only I had somewhere to put it.” To which the hive replied, “idiot, the lamp goes right there.” And five years later, it’s still sitting in this spot - not actually plugged in, but looking this good is really enough.
