Sublime: Manchester Music & Design 1976-1992.

Exhibition Catalogue, Manchester Cornerhouse, 5th September - 18th October 1992.

Just after I left college in York I took a trip to Manchester to hang out in the City and visit all the music and clothes shops…Afflecks Palace, Piccadilly Records, Eastern Bloc etc

Whilst walking around the city I stumbled on an exhibition called Sublime. That moment changed my life.

Not only was I immersed in the work of my heroes - @farrowlondon @farr0wm, Saville, Kelly, @beingmalcolmgarrett, Johnson Panas…I walked into one room and clocked a physical structure (the rest of the work was in frames on the walls) it was the handmade artwork for 8vo’s ‘The Guitar & Other Machines’ - layers of plate glass with different graphic elements stuck to individual sheets of glass…hand drawn Helvetica…rules…photographic cut-outs…it made a lasting impression on me.

The Mac has just arrived and I knew my future was offline.

Most retrospectives are stories about change. Pet Shop Boys Volume, Thames & Hudson’s new book on the group’s visual work from 1984 to 2024, is more interesting for the opposite reason. It shows what held firm.

Across four decades, Pet Shop Boys kept returning to the same problem: how to remain visible in public without becoming fully available.

Their answer lay in two parallel systems: graphic design and menswear. The first of these was shaped above all by Mark Farrow, whose work did not simply package the group but established the visual logic through which they would be seen.

Graphic design ordered the image. Menswear ordered the body. Together they enabled Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe to appear in public without ever quite giving themselves away.

Pet Shop Boys’ forthcoming book “Volume” will be published on 7th April 2026 and is now available to pre-order at the link in bio. All who pre-order “Pet Shop Boys Volume” before Tuesday, 18th November 12pm GMT will also receive priority ticket access to “Obscure Pet Shop Boys”, a very special series of concerts at London’s @electricballroomcamden in which Pet Shop Boys will go deep into their song catalogue, playing only non-single album tracks and B-sides.

“Volume” contains PSB’s entire visual output produced with @farrowlondon including sleeve artworks, video stills, film and performance images, stage sets and costumes, photoshoots, publications, merchandise and more. It also features photographs, designs and productions by celebrated collaborators including Farrow Design, Eric Watson, @wolfgang_tillmans, Martin Parr, @samtaylorjohnson, Zaha Hadid, Derek Jarman, @esdevlin and @tomscuttdesign which are accompanied by short commentaries and captions by writer and long-term PSB collaborator Chris Heath and comments from Pet Shop Boys and Farrow, plus the original 2006 text by author Philip Hoare. by @farrowlondon

Pet Shop Boys today announce the forthcoming publication of “Volume”, a 592-page hardback book published to coincide with the 40th anniversary of the release of their 1986 debut album, “Please”. The book will be published by distinguished art publishers @thamesandhudson on April 7th 2026 and is available to pre-order now in both a standard hardback edition and a signed and numbered limited edition presented in a slipcase.

“Pet Shop Boys Volume” updates, in a different format (234 x 156 mm), the 2006 publication, “Catalogue”, with a full creative retrospective of everything visual produced by PSB with their designers, @farrowlondon, in the 20 years since then. “Volume” is therefore the complete visual record of Pet Shop Boys from 1984 to 2024.

Fans who pre-order “Volume” via the official Pet Shop Boys store will also receive exclusive priority ticket access for the recently-announced “Obscure Pet Shop Boys” concerts at London’s @electricballroomcamden in April. This offer ends on Tuesday, 18th November at 12pm GMT.
