If you grew up hearing Farsi at home, you can probably follow every word of it and still answer back in English. That gap is the whole reason this exists.

So here is the whole thing, screen by screen. Where you land, the course map, a card, the dictionary, a day of practice, and review.

It is free. No ads, nothing sold. Start with no account, or make a free one and it syncs.

Farsi has been spoken for more than 3,000 years. Rumi, Hafez, Ferdowsi. An entire civilisation’s worth of poetry lives inside it.

And it’s the language that got left behind.

Spanish, French, Japanese, Korean. Every one of them made it onto your phone. Five minutes a day, anywhere in the world. Farsi got nothing. So a whole generation grew up hearing it at home, understanding it at dinner, and never learning to read a single word of it. Not because they didn’t care. Because nobody ever built them a way in.

That’s how a culture loses a piece of itself. Not all at once, but one generation at a time, quietly, without anybody deciding it.

So I built the way in.

It opens with a two minute check to see where your Farsi actually stands, so it can start you at your real level instead of teaching you colours and animals. If you already understand half of what your family says, it builds from there. The alphabet. Reading real sentences. Writing. Actually replying instead of freezing.

Mehregān mobārak, whichever day you mark it.

Old sources often pair Mehregān with Nowruz. Al-Biruni, writing around the year 1000, says some people even ranked it higher, by as much as they preferred autumn to spring.

He also passes on an old charm for the day: eat a piece of pomegranate and smell rosewater, and you’ll be spared a lot of bad luck.

In formal and Zoroastrian writing you’ll also see جشن مهرگان خجسته باد, jashn-e Mehregān khojaste bād, “may the Mehregān festival be blessed”.

If you understand Persian but still answer in English, Farsi-jān is a free app made for that.

Send this to the person who gives you delgarmi, and ask if they know what it literally says.

Most of us picked these words up at home long before anyone explained them. We knew when to use them and roughly what they meant, but not what they were made of. Taking them apart doesn’t spoil them. If anything, they get better.

Three of them are built on del. It’s the heart you feel with, but it’s also your stomach: delam dard mikone means my stomach hurts.
Which one did you hear most growing up?

If you understand Persian but still answer in English, Farsi-jān is a free app made for you.

Send this to someone and tell them what their month means.

Plenty of us grew up hearing these names without anyone explaining them. They go back more than two thousand years to the old Zoroastrian calendar, and Iran still uses them today. A few of them are hiding inside words you already say.

In some years every Persian month starts a day earlier, so the dates can shift by one.

If you understand Persian but still answer in English, Farsi-jān is a free app made for exactly that.

Persian is full of this.

A language where chaos is “donkey in donkey”, and worse chaos is “milk in milk”. Where covering something up is smearing yoghurt on it. Where nagging someone makes them go bald, and being heartbroken is your heart going shred-shred.

None of it is decoration. These are the ordinary words. خر تو خره is what you say about traffic. کچلم کردی is what you say when you finally give in. This is just how people talk, all day, and it is one of the better arguments for learning the language even if nobody in your family speaks it.

The catch is you will not find any of it in a textbook. Formal written Persian is close to a different language from the one being spoken in the room, and most courses teach the written one. You come out able to read a newspaper headline and unable to follow your own relatives.

That is the reason Farsi-jān teaches spoken Tehrani instead. The phrases people actually use, in the form they actually say them, written in finglish as well as the script so the alphabet is never the thing that stops you. Free, no ads, nothing sold.

When something goes wrong in a Persian family, a lot of us reach for ببخشید.

It’s the wrong word. Bebakhshid is an apology. It means excuse me, forgive me, I’ve done something. It isn’t what you say to someone who has just had bad news. We say it anyway because it’s the only comfort-shaped word we can reach in time, usually translated straight out of the English “I’m sorry”, which doesn’t work the same way.

Meanwhile the language has a whole shelf of this, and none of it is interchangeable. نگران نباش covers a late bus and a diagnosis. به خودت سخت نگیر is for someone who is punishing themselves, and you have to be close to them to say it. من کنارتم doesn’t mention the problem at all, because it isn’t about the problem. It’s about staying.

If you grew up hearing Farsi you have had every one of these said to you. You probably know whose voice said which. What nobody ever gave you was the other side of it, the turn where you say one back, and that turn arrives at the worst possible time. A phone call. A hospital corridor. An aunt who has just heard something.

That is the real reason to learn it. Not to read poetry. So that when someone in your family is frightened, you have something better to offer them than ببخشید.

When Iran comes up, it is almost never about this.

A thousand-year-old windmill still grinding flour. A fire nobody has let go out since 470 AD. A well dug by hand 2,700 years ago that forty thousand people still drink from this morning.

I grew up with a version of Iran assembled out of headlines and my family’s memories, and neither of those had room for a village where the old people still speak the ancestor of the language.

That is the part I keep running into. Not that it was great once.

That it never stopped.

English has one word for all of it. Thanks.

Persian picks a different blessing depending on what you actually did. If you cooked, it goes to your hands. If you worked all day, it goes to your tiredness. If you were kind, دمت گرم (damet garm), may your breath stay warm.

Nobody is being thanked in any of these. Something is being wished on the part of you that got spent.

I grew up hearing all of it and answering in English. Thanks. No worries. Cheers. A whole system of care coming at me and one flat word going back.

That is the part that actually gets lost. Not the vocabulary. The fact that someone built a language careful enough to notice which part of you did the work, and I was handing back the same word every time.

Nobody leaves a Persian house without being sent off with something.

Look at خدا پشت و پناهت (khodā posht-o panāhet), God be your back and your shelter. به سلامت (be salāmat), go in health. Every goodbye in the language is a small prayer that you will be alright out there.

There is probably a reason for that. This is a language that has done an enormous number of goodbyes.

Six of them in the post. All things people actually say, and not one of them is خداحافظ (khodahafez).

A language this beautiful is being left behind, quietly, one family at a time, by people who understand every word of it and were never taught to say any of it back.

That is the whole reason Farsi-jān exists. It is free, no account needed for the first two phases, and still in beta. Link in bio.
