The Classic Tiger Flehmen Grimace

How It Works

Tigers possess a specialized olfactory tool called the vomeronasal organ (or Jacobson's organ), which is located in the roof of the mouth just behind the front teeth. When a tiger performs the flehmen grimace, it closes its nostrils and inhales through its slightly open mouth. This pulls scent molecules—specifically heavy, moisture-borne pheromones—directly into the vomeronasal organ for deep chemical analysis.

Why Tigers Do It

Because tigers are solitary animals defending massive territories, they rely heavily on chemical communication to stay updated on their neighbors without having to meet face-to-face. A tiger will typically display the flehmen response after sniffing urine spray, scrape marks, or fecal matter left by another tiger on a tree or rock.

The chemical breakdown provides them with an incredible amount of "data":

Reproductive Status: Male tigers use it constantly to detect if a female in the area is in estrus (heat) and ready to mate.

Identity and Presence: It tells the tiger exactly who left the scent and how long ago they passed through the territory.

Age and Health: The pheromones can even convey clues about the overall physical condition of the individual.

For wildlife photographers and observers, catching this expression on camera is a prized moment, as the dramatic "snarl" lasts for several seconds while the tiger processes the scent.

Their coats range from a deep, velvety dark brown to jet black in mature males, contrasting sharply with their lower legs, which look like they are wearing clean white or tan socks.
