Clip tour of the last week: lobster rolls campfires, workout smashing, fast cars, and mentoring the next generation of great athletes. It has been a wild week of business ups and downs with a single constant reminder that the journey is the people you have near you. I’m lucky to have so much good to fight for, so many goals yet to reach so much growth to still work through. Thank you to the clients, colleagues, friends and teammates that make this lovely life possible. Feeling lucky. Now back to work…..maybe after one more lobster roll. 🛎️ by @fasturdays

One year ago today, the fires came, and like many Angelino’s, it took pretty much everything I had. But it also gave me many things. It took family heirlooms, artifacts from my life things from my childhood photos of my grandparents, my families, vintage and encyclopedia set every race number I’ve ever had all the gifts and all the talismans and all the things that showed me the life that I had lived. But it gave me clarity, humility, and an opportunity to reconsider what truly matters. About a month after the fire I got into a car accident.

I recall, I was sleeping on a newly purchased mattress laying on the floor inside a completely vacant one bedroom apartment that I just moved into. I didn’t have clothes hangers, but I did have friendship I had self-confidence. I had a family that loves me. I have a city that I love. I have neighbors that offered kindness and support. I had friends I hadn’t heard from in years, reach out to express love and kindness and support. I was rich. I was bountiful. I was plentiful.

I’ve long remembered a phrase from Robert Frost from one of his many incredible American poems, There have been many times when I faced ugly, often dangerous, usually overwhelming, and confusing circumstances in my life, and I have faced these things, not alone, but seemingly always with the team of some sort and I have remembered this key phrase.

“The only way out is through.”

I am lucky. My home burned and no one died. I am lucky: my car was crumpled and no one went to the hospital. I am lucky because I have the things fire cannot take.

I went to Costa Rica because there was a beach town called Santa Teressa I was told was far enough away to be perfect.

It was new year’s holiday. At night, I danced on the sand with hundreds of strangers. I rode a motorcycle along an unnamed ocean road to find bar than never existed. There were waterfalls. I surfed then drank fresh coconut. I did moonlight yoga. I heard the jungle. I sat at a roadside shack with coffee and papaya and watched the mopeds and rickety trucks and bikinis and bustle flow by. I lifted weights at “Life Guard” (never sweated so much in my LIFE) which tapped me into a fraternity of bar bell connoisseurs that still surprises me. I left videos for friends. I ran over bridges in a rain forest to the sound of storms and howler moneys. We were chased by authorities.

I was not alone. At night, the windows kept open and we stayed up late with the sheets off. In the morning was a tiny rental car, there were open windows and long roads with stomach-clutching drop offs in to volcanic ravines filled with clouds. Everywhere, the coffee was good, sometimes great. I think I left a shirt on beach somewhere by accident. Across the country, everyone smiled. I laughed quite a bit.

On the plane home I reached into stuffed backpack and took out some cocoa beans and decided I wouldn’t save them until I got home. by @fasturdays

Purpose. Balance.

Words of advice my parents gave me. Tattoos on each arm. I used to think those were big words. Life purpose. Life balance. But now, finally, I realize, purpose is found in how I grip a bar, how I listen to a friend, how I give myself the space to think before I write. What is the purpose of this, right now? And balance, maybe isn’t about safety and moderation, but about the harmony of extremes, the wisdom to counter point effort with repose, receiving with giving, that if I choose to go all the way in, I must, at some point come all the way out, that if I spend all this energy in service, then I must also, at some point serve myself. Two words with me forever. For now at least, my purpose seems clear, and well, with all this laughter and friendship and hard work and sweat and new places on the map, well, seems like it’s my kinda balance too.

My mother taught me to think for myself, work for what I want, and to never follow a weak leader but whenever the situation requires it, be a strong one.

My earliest memory of motherly advice I’ve gotten from her (maybe I was 10…11…) involved reading a story together (we’ve read together our whole lives) about a western pioneer who fought a bear with a knife and lost. I remember saying how awful that sounded. My mother replied “It’s a fair way to go.” Those words, and others like that from her, shaped my life. She taught me that how you live is more important than when you die. That ideas matter. That power corrupts. That freewill is always under threat. That books matter. That simple kindness in the bond of society. That men need to do better, and it’s my responsibility to be a good one. She gave me love for free but praise for a price I had to earn.

She had me young and that gives us time. I’m grateful for every second. by @fasturdays

🎥 30-days of no social media, plus mandatory phone free days.

Social media disappeared without a fight. Not sure if I want to come back. I deleted the app. Putting away the phone was tougher. I work on it, socialize, research, navigate life with it. Yikes. I blocked out phone time and no phone time. I put it in an another room. I put tape on it that said “are u sure?” For two weeks I thought it was the enemy. Yes I was still very social, but! my relationships were deeper. I called friends. I prioritized the male relationships in my life and felt more valued and loved than ever. I became more giving to my social circle. I talked to my parents more. I felt grateful. I felt engaged.

After two weeks: no anxiety. I shut off the fire hose of cultural opinions on how to live, who to be, how to think, and what I needed to do to be a better man. Instead I listened to my body. I felt. I meditated. I relearned what I already knew. I grew more and more self assured. My self belief (never weak) started burning. I made good tough choices. (Some bad v. choices too, still growing, still fucking up). By week three: More ideas. More hope. More energy. More generosity. Less mental noise, more mental curiosity. I created space in my skull and my soul filled it.

I became better with the world. Less about what others thought about it, or me, and started to see again really what my world is, what and who should be part of it, and what I can do to make it better. by @fasturdays

My last workout as a 47year old.

This year, for my 49th year, I’m giving a gift to myself. It is the gift of space and time. I give the gift of “less.” After the festivities conclude, for 30-days following (a small but meaningful interval) I will govern my life by the tenets listed below. Through these tenets I seek, in modern psych-parlance, to “fill my cup” so that there may be more to give later. I seek to re-fill heart, mind and body in the way nature does: in quiet certainty.

Tenet: Solitude
Be alone. To still the mind, to get bored, to touch loneliness, to let the water settle and see more clearly what lays beneath. Isolation is unnecessary, but solitude is.

Tenet: Analog
Books, pencils, nature. No social media, no digital entertainment, and as much as possible, no phone. Reality and physical presence above all.

Tenet: Austerity
Use less, need less. Forego the superficial. Savor the essential. Overcome impulse. Embrace temperance. Cleave distraction.

Tenet: Natural
In the sun, outside, in water, among trees, touching earth. Eat simply, drink water. Know the air. Know the land.

Tenet: Quality
Express values, connect with depth. Hone in on: People of substance. Tasks of consequence. Moments and ideas that grow.

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach, and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.” ― Henry David Thoreau, Walden by @fasturdays
