Playero Aliblanco (Tringa semipalmata)

Fuente The Shorebirds of North America:

Willet Tringa semipalmata

Willet is one of the most understudied birds in North America despite its accessible nesting and wintering locations. The two distinct subspecies have a number of differences regarding their nest locations and habitat preferences, migratory timing/strategy, molt timing, voice, and wintering locations (with some overlap),
Sexual dimorphism (differences between males and females) with respect to size, body shape, and bill structure is apparent in Western Willet but not typically in Eastern.

Pico Corvo (Numenius phaeopus ssp. hudsonicus)

April 21st is celebrated as World Curlew Day, an initiative led by local communities and supported by environmental organizations around the world. The goal is to raise awareness about the troubling situation faced by these migratory birds and to encourage actions for their conservation.

Pico Corvo (Numenius phaeopus ssp. hudsonicus)

Whimbrel (Numenius phaeopus ssp. hudsonicus)

The Whimbrel is a large shorebird, easily recognizable by its elegant silhouette and long, downward-curved bill. It is a highly migratory species, undertaking long-distance journeys from the Arctic tundra to tropical and subtropical regions during the southern hemisphere’s winter. The subspecies that visits this region is Numenius phaeopus hudsonicus, commonly known as the Hudsonian Whimbrel or simply hudsonicus. though they also show subtle morphological variations, such as plumage tone, body size, and bill length. Regarding sexual dimorphism, males and females are very similar, although females tend to be slightly larger and have a longer, more curved bill, a feature that can help distinguish them during detailed observation.

Garza Azul
(Egretta caerulea)

Little Blue Heron
(Egretta caerulea)

The Egretta caerulea plays a crucial role in the aquatic ecosystems of the Americas, helping to regulate populations of fish, amphibians, and invertebrates through predation. Its presence in wetlands also serves as an indicator of environmental health, as it depends on the availability of resources and water quality for its survival.

Its remarkable plumage transformation, changing from white in its juvenile stage to slate blue in adulthood, is not only a distinctive feature but also provides ecological advantages. Juveniles, with their white feathers, can blend into groups of snowy egrets (Egretta thula), benefiting from their group feeding strategy and increasing their chances of capturing prey. As adults, their darker plumage offers camouflage in marshy environments, enhancing their efficiency as solitary hunters.

Garza tricolor (Egretta tricolor)

Tricolored Heron
Egretta tricolor

The tricolored heron (Egretta tricolor) owes its distinctive bluish-gray hue to the composition and structure of its feathers. This coloration results from the presence of melanin, a pigment that darkens and strengthens the feathers, combined with the scattering of light.
Its plumage features a striking mix of colors: the upper body is bluish-gray, while the neck and chest are white, as is the belly. This pattern provides effective camouflage in its natural habitat, which includes swamps, marshes, and coastal areas, where it hunts fish and other small aquatic animals.

Garza Rojiza
Egretta rufescens

¿A qué distancia?

Reddish egret
Egretta rufescens
This remarkable coastal wading bird, with long legs and a long neck, has a greater preference for saltwater than any other heron or egret.
The reddish egret is the rarest egret species found in North America
What scientists do know about the rarest North American egret species is that its population is declining — an estimated 4,250 breeding pairs exist today, down from at least twice that number in the 1930s — and that the saline coastal habitat it relies on for survival is at major risk of destruction by human activities

Charadrius alexandrinus

Kentish Plover
Charadrius alexandrinus

This species was named by George Ord for his friend Alexander Wilson, often called the father of American ornithology, after the bird was collected by Wilson in 1813 in Cape May, NJ. Birds occur on sparsely vegetated sandy beaches, adjacent salt flats, and intertidal mudflats, where they forage mostly for crabs (especially fiddler crabs, which constitute a majority of their diet)
Three subspecies of Wilson’s Plovers are recognized worldwide, with two occurring in North America. C. w. wilsoni breeds , and C. w. beldingi breeds in the Gulf of California and along the Pacific Coast from central Baja California south to Peru.

Chorlito nevado
Anarhynchus nivosus

Snowy Plover
Charadrius nivosus

“Snowy is a short-distance and partial migrant, and migration timing varies regionally” “Near Threatened by the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature), even though Snowy Plover often utilizes a polyandrous mating system that enables up to three clutches a year where a warm climate permits an extended breeding season. In these instances, females desert their mates when chicks start hatching to begin nesting with another male.”
