I call this “Tea Party”. I imagine that this is how Alice In Wonderland would have looked if it was set in Paris.
This poor girl has been through it. She started as a straight forward watercolor portrait but my ADHD brain wasn’t satisfied, so I was like “Hold my drink Imma get crazy!” Crazy didn’t work out—my glow up left her tore up. So I salvaged what I could and made her into a water color collage. Rest assured that the process was longer and more painful than I’ve described.

My job search is slow going. Employers don’t seem as delighted to hire me as you might think which is doing nothing for my dreams of independent wealth.
So let’s be whimsical and shit. I painted this little lady about a year ago. I’m not sure if she’s a naiad or a mermaid or just a girl who p*ssed off the mob, but she’s acrylic and hangs out in my bathroom looking for fish in the toilet bowl. If you look closely you can see that she’s got tiny fish in her eyeball. I’ll admit that’s creepier than intended.

Welcome back to Kelly Did Something. This is a 24” x 30” acrylic/mixed media I call Persephone. Persephone was supposed to be a portrait of my daughter but I am me and my hand does what it wants so my daughter is now black and the goddess of spring. Sure it would be nice to paint my intended idea sometimes but then I’d miss out on the surprise. And if I was less chaotic my kids wouldn’t recognize me. I don’t want to startle them with consistency.

Sometimes I paint. Usually I work on a smaller scale so I painted this 3’ x 4’ acrylic to stretch my comfort zone. My hat’s off to muralists. Bigger is riskier. I call this one “Calypso.” Your girl loves a Greek myth.

Today’s prompt is “award.” I had every intention of drawing someone being awarded knighthood or a crown but she ended up a child with trees growing out of her head. I don’t know how these things work.
I’m grateful to Inktober for giving me something positive to focus on and for reigniting my creative spark. It’s ending at about the right time though because I’m starting to get rebellious and ornery.

Today’s prompt is “vacant.” Sometimes the gremlin inside my brain encourages me to do things in the interest of short term amusement that I know from experience are not going to work out for me in the long term, so last night I had a dinner of wine, Halloween candy, and green beans (to make it nutritious) while I stayed up past my bedtime to watch Jordan Peele’s Nope with the kids and this morning the inside of my skull is like this derelict building. I drew this with bleary eyes, 2 brain cells in half-light and I think it really comes through. The gremlin is now sleeping blissfully while I struggle. Also, is there a tariff on joy and insulin shock because the price of candy is ridiculous? I can’t afford to ruin my teeth properly.

Today’s prompt is “onion.” If you’ve seen Shrek you know that ogres are like onions, they have layers. This is Shrek’s cousin Derek. He’s actually part onion. Derek doesn’t get invited to parties because he makes everyone cry and he smells like feet. And now that I’m thinking about it I wish I’d just given Derek a really nice layered haircut. He didn’t deserve the onion treatment.
