You can’t have it all…

But you can humbly attempt, through an awkward and painful waddle, to reach your beach towel after a swim. And before laying your tired body down, you can spend another five minutes rearranging them into a comfortable composition, one you won’t dare move from for the next hour.

You can get bangs peak heat season initially regretting your decision, until you realize that the person in the mirror looks more and more like her maman when she was 20.

You can’t always count on Carrefour City to have double shot espresso cans in stock, but at least it gives you a reason to get up early the next morning, stopping by the bakery on the way back as compensation for your efforts.

You can pass the time with your best friend by playing would you rather games, bursting out in laughter even before the first prompt, because you know that whatever will follow could be the most unreasonable scenarios imaginable.

You can have dog hair…absolutely…everywhere.

You can have a million girl breakfasts and girl dinners because French apartment kitchens weren’t built for cooking anyway.

And you can feel homesick or complain about the humid heat as much as you want. But remember : this trip was what got you through the long winter months, longing to feel the sun against your back again.

Because before you know it, September will come. And you’ll be anxiously clinging onto your tan, the last sign of your beautiful summer.
