If God is the ultimate originator and we're all, in a sense, copyists, what does it really mean to be creative?

Genesis 1:1 says:

“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.”

God created. He is the ultimate Creator.

But studying creativity has made me think differently about what human creativity means.

Sir John Hegarty writes about God as the ultimate originator, while humans are, in a sense, copyists.

Austin Kleon makes a similar point in Steal Like an Artist: “All creative work builds on what came before.”

Hegarty also argues that the value of an idea lies in how it draws inspiration from the world around us and reinvents it in a way we haven't seen before.

That distinction is important.

Maybe creativity isn't about creating something from absolutely nothing.

Maybe it's about what you do with what you've been given.

What you've seen.

What you've learned.

What you've experienced.

What has inspired you.

You take these things, connect them, reshape them, and express them in your own way.

The ingredients may already exist. The expression is yours.

This made me rethink my own understanding of creativity.

For years, I didn't consider myself creative because I had a narrow picture of what a creative person looked like.

I thought creativity belonged mainly to artists, designers, photographers, and people who could make extraordinary things.

I didn't see myself in that picture.

So I concluded:

“I'm not creative.”

But the more I learn, the more I'm realizing that perhaps I wasn't lacking creativity.

I simply hadn't learned to recognize where mine lived.

And maybe that's true for more people than we realize.

Creativity can show up in how you write, solve problems, tell stories, build businesses, teach, design systems, or see possibilities others overlook.

So perhaps the better question isn't:

“Am I creative?”

It's:

“What am I doing with everything I've seen, learned, experienced, and imagined?”

Sometimes, creativity is simply taking what already exists—

and showing us something we've never seen in quite that way before.

One uncomfortable truth: what makes you valuable today may not be enough tomorrow.

The world keeps changing.
Technology keeps evolving.
People's needs keep changing.

So don't get too comfortable with who you are today.

Keep learning.
Keep growing.
Keep becoming.

Don't plateau.

For a very long time, I genuinely believed ministry wasn't for me.

Not because I didn't love God.

Not because I didn't want to serve Him.

I just couldn't see myself doing what I thought ministry was supposed to look like.

Whenever I heard “ministry,” my mind went straight to the pulpit.

Preaching.

Leading a church.

Standing in front of people.

And I remember thinking, “Yeah… that's not me.”

So I quietly settled on:

“I don't want to do ministry.”

But looking back now, I realize I wasn't rejecting ministry.

I was rejecting a picture of ministry I had created in my head.

I had made the pulpit the definition of ministry and forgotten that ministry is much bigger than that.

A teacher can minister.

A doctor can minister.

A writer can minister.

A business owner can minister.

A baker can minister.

Your skill, your career, your creativity, your influence—any of these can become a channel through which God serves others through you.

And that changed the question for me.

Not:

“Do I want to do ministry?”

But:

“How does God want to use me?”

Because perhaps purpose doesn't always look like what we've seen before.

Maybe the career you're building isn't separate from your assignment.

Maybe the gift you've been treating as “just something I'm good at” has a place in what God wants to do through you.

Maybe the people you meet and the spaces you're placed in are part of it too.

I'm still learning what that means for me.

But I'm beginning to understand that I don't have to fit someone else's picture of ministry to be useful to God.

I just need to be willing to let Him use what He has given me. by @favourabel879
