This weekend, we arrive at the 2 year mark since Hurricane Helene devastated Western North Carolina. I still remember the fear and helplessness I felt as I sat in my room, being unable to contact my mom, my family members, and friends due to WNC having no cell service during & after the floods. To this day, when I tell people about the event, they are shocked by the severity of it all.

Due to the lush forests of the Appalachian mountains, there wasn't really much opportunity to do helicopter rescues. In the first few days, most news sources couldn't even get down there to report on it. Major highways and railroads were destroyed, leaving people trapped with little to no resources and no way for others to help them. The water system of Asheville was destroyed as well, leaving people without clean running water. The major grocery store distributing building flooded as well, leaving people with no food. And due to most people living in hollers, the only way to get to them was on foot. People from other states started traveling to WNC with the horses and mules to help deliver supplies. Even my mom, who is a social worker, walked miles on foot to home visits because there was no other way to get to them. Even 2 years later, people are still homeless because they lost everything to the storm.

Watching where I grew up, the place I love more than anywhere else in the world, under water was something I cannot put into words. People I went to middle school with were reported as missing. My aunt lost her home. My childhood best friend's neighborhood no longer exists. It's just grass next to a creek now. It's still hard to process and accept as reality, because it was so surreal. Things like that don't happen there. It felt like it was the apocalypse, and anyone who lived through it will tell you it was.

As the years progress and I visit my hometown, it's slowly going back to normal. But everywhere you look, there are natural monuments of that devastation. From the large piles of fallen trees rotting idly by the side of the road, to buildings still being unsuitable to open, and to the riverbed sediment laying yards & yards away from the riverbank showing how high that by @fawnplant
