When my daughter graduated from high school, I promised myself I would finally begin taking care of me—but life had another chapter waiting. I stepped into caring for my mother until I laid her to rest in 2022, and somewhere along the way, I realized I no longer had the same energy or capacity I once did. That truth weighed on me, and for a time I was hard on myself, struggling to accept that I couldn’t do things the way I used to. Slowly, I began shedding old expectations and identities, recognizing that I was not losing myself—I was evolving. Entering my 70s has required me to meet a new version of me with honesty and compassion, understanding that I don’t need to relive what I’ve already lived.

Now I embrace this new mindset, body, and season with grace. I’ve learned to give myself mercy, to move in ways that feel true to me, and to let people talk if they choose—because I’m finally at peace being myself. Whether it’s how I dress, how I show up, or even becoming a deacon and standing confidently in my individuality, I know I am not here to fit anyone else’s mold. As my 92-year-old grandmother wisely said, “Baby, I am older, I am not dead.” And she’s right—I am alive, growing, and planting seeds for others to do the same. I love who I am becoming, and I’m proud to be me. by @fayesthings
